hi all

a question my wife has asked me a few times that i am able to answer in part myself

dual nationality British/Thai does NOT excuse the child when of age from the compulsory national service at age 20

what is the situation however if the child/person (then 20) is either living in the UK or elsewhere, at uni in the UK for example

are they made to return to Thailand to go in the army

do they get into trouble on there return to Thailand if they do not turn up on there due conscription date

i would suspect a person with only thai citizenship would be expected to return .. but half falangs exercising there dual nationality .

could be said that having british citizenship does not override the requirement for army service of course as it does not. that though is when the person is resident in thailand.

A person is not made to return to the country.

You register at the amphur and will undergo a lottery. Many people abroad do not register and are not called. Also study is an excuse to be exempt during the study, which can be abroad or in Thailand. Once turning 30, one is no longer called. (But will be placed in the reserve army, low category. Unless a war breakes out it is unlikely one will get called).

Once returning to Thailand you have to register. If over 30 you will be fined for not registering for military service and be fined soemthing like 500 baht and placed in the reserve army as above. If under 30, you pay the fine and will be drafted.

Can a Thai or duel citizen satisfy his Military Service obligations in other ways?

I think I read elsewhere that if the person in question did the Cadets program course at school ... correct?

Other ways?

Yes, if he goes to high school in Thailand he can join the cadets training programm starting from class 4. It means that they receive training for a few hours every week and also have some extra weekends and days that they undergo training. Having followed the course they become part of the reserve army and will not be drafted.

I'm not sure if you can do likewise when studying at university.
