If I over stay my visa do I stand a chance of going to jail? Is the daily rate 200 baht? Can the Hat Lek run be done on my own(public bus) or do I have to go with a tour group and pay a premium.

I overstayed once because the Immigration office told me that I should wait and see as I was applying for a visa extension. I flew out of BKK int'l airport and girl at the check in desk told me that I had overstayed and I should offer to pay the fine at the Immigration desk. I gave him my passport open to the page with my entry stamp and was about to tell him about the overstay and he guestered to me to back off. So I did. Then he told me that I had overstayed and brought me off to a little office where I signed my name in a number of big books and they took copies of my passport and I paid the fine.

I had been told before that if you tell them at Immigration that you have overstayed, and offer to pay the fine that you'll be ok. On the other hand if don't declear that you have overstayed and the Immigration guy/girl discovers it you could face time in jail. But I am sure that if you are cooperative you don't need to worry.

It was 200baht a day a few years ago, don't know about now.

Has anyone done the Hat Lek crossing. Agencies in Pattaya are charging over 2000 B to do this run. Has anyone done it for less money by using public transport to the border?
