I posted on this subject a while back and I was wondering if anyone has the same problem with the paint peeling off their license plates as it is on my car plates. About five months after I bought my new car, I noticed the paint peeling off the plates and now the front plate no longer has any black paint on the letters and numbers and even the white paint is starting to crack and crumble. It looks terrible and if I want to sell the car it would create a very negative first impression. Has anyone had this problem and if so did you go to the transport department and ask for new plates or ask to have them repainted. I was told by a colleague that it would be illegal to alter or change anything on the license plates myself. I don't know if that is true or if it applies to repainting the plates. I tought I might go to a good auto paint shop but then I would probabaly have to leave them there to dry properly. People are starting to ask me why I have such shitty looking license plates.

You are correct that it is illegal to paint licence plates. Even touching up the black on the numbers is illegal.

Buy some fancy plastic covers?

I guess you could always buy "vanity" plates?

It is a known problem. You can order new ones at the transportation office .. that is the reason for the delay in new plates.

A year or two back my wife was pulled over in one of our cars and given a ticket due to the black paint peeled off the number plate and in the opinion of the BIB making it hard to read the plate. I assumed that this was just an excuse to pull her over for some tea money but she was actually issued with a tciket and had to go to the police station to pay the fine. To make a long story short, it is worth addressing the issue as you can be pulled over and fined. To fix the plates my wife did just go to a paint shop to get the black numbers touched up, perhaps illegal but effective.

I have a new car at the moment with white plates of which are about 7 months old . Have not noticed any issues with the paint, but now that you have brought it up I will take a closer look.

Leave it. Who cares. Put some Hello Kitty stickers on it.

Of all the things to worry about in life...

Is this an attempt at irony after your Fortuna/er topic?.....

As the OP was asking for some help I feel a little misplaced if that is the case rolleyes.gif

Well. I would say, put up with it for now and then go order new plates.

The plates in my Cruze are in mint condition after over a year now. So; must be something wrong when they gave them to you.

What else can you do?

Even my old City didn't have this problem after 6 years. I think after all those years and hitting a dog, the front one had the #2 a little bit of the paint coming off. That was about it.
