worgeordie
When my wife goes shopping at the market, she can return with strange, smelly items, its know that Thais dont like the smell of roast lamb or beef, but putrid dried fish is like mana from heaven . Yesterday she came back with a bag of Lucky Beetles, !! she said most of the stallholders in the market had a jar of these beetles and that they bring good luck?,these are very small black beetles, their food is puffed rice,no water, keep them out of the Sun. It seems this craze ,fad ,call it what you will, started in Mae Hong Son,where most houses are said to have a jar of these lucky beetles,I have no idea how this came about, maybe someone who s house was infested with these beetles won the lottery, who knows, but Thais will look for luck anywhere, lottery number from a crashed car on tv, from the bark of a tree, and even stranger places. So we will be looking after our Lucky Beetles very well,if you see me driving around Chiang Mai in a Bentley, you will know they work. This is what I like about Thailand, nothing is what it seems, nothing is normal, every day is an adventure, regards Worgeordie
mcgriffith
Great post on the quirks of Thai life here. And the title drew me in like a tractor beam....
Semper
So we will be looking after our Lucky Beetles very well,if you see me drivingaround Chiang Mai in a Bentley, you will know they work. From several years of experience with the lucky beetles, I would suggest that you look after your present car in a similar way.

scd
Yup the GF has them at her shop. As Dave suggests, popcorn is their diet. Apparently they're helping the shop run well by consuming and consummating 24 hours a day.
hellodolly
Looks like a good business opportunity. Be the first in your condo or neighborhood to own your own jar of beetles. Instant success. Yes indeed Thailand does have its cute little quirks.

lowballz
i got some of these beetles myself. Does anyone know what the proper/scientific name of them is?
Chiengmaijoe
They are good luck for your business, as is the waving cat. I hope you have one of them too. I could compile a list of the many offerings my wife makes every day and the lucky charms she has around the place, but life is too short. To be fair though...... Business IS good. worgeordie
Update, they are breeding like ,eh, beetles, we now have 3 big jars of them, they eat a lot of the puffed rice,so we have more, but our luck has stayed about the same, but at same time have had nothing bad happen, in fact have been winning almost every month on the UK Premium Bonds, only 25,50s ,so maybe need 4/5 jars to win the big one !.. regards Worgeordie

daoyai
The weevel fad seems to have died down, a year or two ago seems every place had a jar of weevels, now not so much.
fcgprg
They are an extremely damaging to crops and dried food so be very careful in the domestic setting if they escape from your little jars. Not an insect you really want to be helping to breed in the house because of some stupid superstition.
Frank James
They have a jar of these on the counter at a restaurant I eat at quite frequently. Always the same jar, hundreds of these beetles wriggling and writhing, and it looks like the same popcorn. Can you imagine this at any restaurant in the West? They would call in the haz-mat team.
