Also, last time I was in BKK, this airport train link thing didn`t exist. Will there be clear signs showing me where to board it and is it easy to walk to it from the "Arrivals" gate?

Taking the Airport Rail Link (ARL) , maybe to Phaya Thai, then the BTS (Sukhumvit Line) to Udom Suk may be a round about sort of way to get to your final destination?

Is a taxi out of the question?

What is your final destination?

At Suvarnabhumi Bangkok International Airport (BKK) Arrivals is on level 2, the ARL station is within the airport, down 2 levels. There is decent signage.

You can take a City Line train (local) to Phaya Thai, or Express Train to Phaya Thai.

Train all the way with waiting-on-off time would take an hour if youre lucky. Fastest way would be to exit ARL at Huang Mak and take a taxi to Udomsuk.

Taxi will be quicker and most likely cheaper as long as you insist on the meter.

You'd be going all the way into Bangkok to come almost all the way out again.

There must be a minivan from the airport to Udom suk or bang na.

If you insist on the train and don't mind carting your luggage a bit get the APL to Makassan (about 25 mins) then walk about 200-400m to the MRT get that one stop to Sukhumvit (about 5 mins) then take the stairs/escalators to Asok BTS and take the BTS to US about 10-15 mins .

Taxi for this journey is a much better option.

For today I think I will just stick with the no taxi approach, because I only need to make this particular trip once. The final stop is Udom Suk today.

Contrary to the above advice a taxi will not be cheaper, though it is most correct to say it will be much more direct and possibly even quicker depending on road conditions.

The above advice is also correct that changing at Makkasan to the MRT, then to the BTS, will save a little bit of journey time (est 10 mins max) and do note his advice on the luggage front, if you have any large luggage it is probably not worth the hassle, stick the the ARL to Phaya Thai then straight on the BTS.

Assuming you take the Cityline the cost will be;

1) ARL 45 baht to PT ; BTS 55 baht PT to US

2) ARL 35 baht to Makk; MRT 16 to Suk; BTS 45 Asoke to US

This is the best map of the current metros which may be of assistance in providing clarity to the two options for interchanging, http://www.bts.co.th/customer/en/02-route-current.aspx

The suggestion to exit the Rail Link at HUA MARK (3rd stop) and go to Udom Suk by taxi seems to be the most practical, probably no more than B20-B30 added cost opposed to Rail Link-MRT-BTS route and much faster.

Walking from the top platform of Makkasan with bags down to street level, then 300 meters and down to the MRT platform then up again to the Sukhumvit/Asok platform then down again at Udom Suk sounds pretty sweaty and aggravating.
