Four handed death penalty for Chinese sailor deaths

BEIJING, Nov 6, 2012 (AFP) - Four members of a gang accused of masterminding the murder of 13 Chinese sailors on the Mekong River last year were sentenced to death at a court in southwest China on Tuesday.

The sailors were killed last October in a raid on two Chinese cargo boats on the Mekong, an attack thought to have been carried out by a notorious gang in the "Golden Triangle", an area known for drug production and smuggling.

The reading of the verdicts was shown live on state television.

The trial finished in September after the gang of six men pleaded guilty to intentional homicide, drug trafficking, kidnapping and hijacking, state news agency Xinhua said in September.

Another defendant received a suspended death sentence, while a sixth man was handed eight years in prison at the sentencing at Kunming Intermediate People's Court.

The gang, based in Myanmar's northern Shan state, was led by Myanmar national Naw Kham, who was one of the men sentenced to death.

At least one of the remaining five gang members is Thai, but the nationalities of the other four is unclear.

The "Golden Triangle" is where the Mekong River runs through China, Myanmar, Thailand and Laos.

Last year's incident sparked an angry reaction from China, which summoned diplomatic envoys from Thailand, Laos and Myanmar and asked authorities to speed up investigations into the incident.

What's the bet they get off without a death penalty and a few years to think about it until the courts in Thailand find the time to hear the pleadings.

This gets confusing according to the OP's new story they convicted a Shan state gang nothing about 9 Thai soldiers.. anyhow the Chinese dont mess around with appeals, they are taken out to the execution ground and despatched with a bullet to the back of the neck straight after sentencing.

There must have been some deal made between the Chinese and Thai Govt.

BANGKOK, Oct. 28 (Xinhua) -- Nine army men have turned themselves in and confessed to killing 13 Chinese sailors on Mekong River in Golden Triangle earlier this month, Thai police chief said Friday.

The suspects were servicemen of the Third Military Command of the Thai Army, which guards the northern border of Thailand, said Thai police chief Pol Gen Priewpan Damapong.

Gen Yuthasak said the nine Thai soldiers, if implicated, will have to attend hearing in the Chinese court but the defendant must pinpoint the alleged wrongdoings with evidence.

The nine members of a Thai military task force who were initially charged with involvement in the murder were later cleared of the implications. However, the Myanmar suspect reversed his earlier statement.

Funny how you can confess to murder then cleared of charges.

Does anyone know where the 9 Thai soldiers are and if they are going to be tried. It has been very quiet since their arrest.

How can you suspend a death sentence? What mustn't the guy do to escape the ultimate sanction? Will riding a bicycle at night without a rear light bring down his curtain?
