9 mm should be the minimum. The 'girly' calibers are less likely to stop an aggressor.... (well, feel free to Google the thousands of debates on the net regarding this issue). If she's anything like my wife, she'll want something 'cute' like a Beretta Bobcat. You might be able to steer her towards something more effective/practical but still relatively 'cute' in a Glock 26 or Ruger LC9.

Did l read somewhere that Thai ladies can only own a .22.

No, can legally get a license for .38 or 9mm.

OP, ignore the anti-gun trolls.

There are several threads on tv,

which will give you an idea of the process involved.

I suggest you don't show your face.

Get the info, educate wife as to the law,

let her go to the Ampour and start the paperwork.

You did not mention if this is only for the house,

or if it will be carried about.

See the laws. Do not TAKE THEM LIGHTLY.

It is important that you,

are never seen with it in your possession,

UNLESS you qualify under the law.

We have 3 police fiends,

they all say the same thing,

IF a perp is IN YOUR HOUSE,

and you/she shoot him,

don't stop till he is dead.

AND if you do the shooting,

do NOT admit it, let the wife claim she did it.

I understand wifey wants a "girly gun".

Handgun control means having a firm grip.

Most Thai women don't have strong hands.

Therefor don't have a firm grip.

Therefore a weapon with low recoil,

and preferably a large grip.

I've 4 handguns (back at home),

- Colt 1911 Gold Match

- Colt 1911

- Colt 1911 on a CCT conversion

http://www.mechtechsys.com/

dam_n nice. I,ve the pistol grip folding stock unit)

- Czech copy of a 32 acp Walther PPK

(finish is not good, but really accurate at 50 meters)

For home defence,

I prefer a .410 autoloader shotgun,

using 00 buckshot.

I do prefer hollowpoints,

specifically Speer Gold-Dots, 9-petal.

Hollowpoints are illegal in Thailand.

FMJ round ball may over-pentarate the target.

Here, you can get reloads using wadcutters.

Ms. Howto is far more proficent with a hangun than I.

- Did not like the PPK

- Did not like my friends Glock 9mm

- Did not like my friends Glock 10mm

- Luvs the Colt 1911 (and is dam_n good with it)

The paperwork will be laborous.

Must first be done at the ampure,

one needs permission to purchase.

Good if you/she have some BiB friends.

Of choices for a handgun,

- 25 acp

- 32 acp

- 38 revolver

- 45 acp

These are all subsonic, low recoil.

The 25 or 32 acp will be hard to source here.

The suggestion of

buying a used one 'locally' was good.

The most common handguns here are

- 38 revolver

- 9mm Glock

- 10mm Chinese

- 45 acp Colt

You will find these 3x the price from your home country.

Even used.

Ammo is also very expensive.

I suggest the .45 colt or .38 revolver.

Often a local BiB wants to sell theirs.

Do add a good grip (I prefer Hogue)

Take her to the local range to learn,

proper handling, stance, safety.

At the end of all of this,

you may find a .22 will suit needs.

Don't underestimate it.

Lots have been killed with one.

I personally have 4 Ruger 10-22 rifles.

One has a bull barrel and is a tack-driver at 50 meter.

Now I/wife do not have a firearm.

If we lived in Issan we would.

Well if she gets a gun better get lots of practice using it. Having a gun and being able to use it in a stressful situation are two different things. Only lots of practice will help where your body physically knows the drill for what it should be doing.

Then of course it should be locked away, but will her hands be physically able to unlock under stress.

Having the gun is only one thing, handling stress is another.

If you don't value you or your family's life, have nothing of value and have 100% faith in mankind, then you have no need for a gun...or locks for that matter.

Me, I tick all the boxes. I have guns and pitbulls.

And I sincerely hope these bring you peace of mind.

I myself will pursue other means to achieve that goal, ultimately the only one worth striving for.

a good post for sure, wife can use a 38 well, being small of stature, her grip and stance must be textbook in nature, but for her to draw a weapon from a holster, under duress well unless she becomes a sporting shooter,no one would know her capability.

watched a video before of Los Angeles street coppers, showing how difficult it was for them to draw their weapon to fire a shot at a knife wielding aggressor who was running at him at pace from about 30 metres, good training video for all people required to carry fire arms.

Johnny, and I guess that's what it is all about. They do bring me peace of mind.

Where I live and what I have requires I take precautions.

Yes, I agree,

Using a firearm under duress,

especially a handgun,

is difficult under the best of circumstances.

Unless you are well trained.

SO WHATEVER,

TEACH WIFEY TO USE IT, AND

TEACH YOURSELF.

That is why

I prefer a .410 shotgun for home defense.

Shoot from the hip,

low recoil,

at 3 meter,

a 2 meter spread of 8 .38 cal pells.

One has 6~8 rounds.

YOU CANT MISS.

Certainly beats a handgun.

Of course, finding that here

is impossible.

Since the late '80s,

I am permitted to Conceal-Carry (CC).

I carried the Colt 1911-A1.

I stopped 2 attempted robberies

of 7-11 gas stations and

1 attempted robbery

in a Kroger parking lot (at night)

against a female.

No shots fired.

All perps arrested.

If any one of them had raised their weapon,

they would have been shot.

Period. Without hesitation.

Again, for home defense,

'anything' that makes a "bang"

is enough to drive off a perp.

They are cowards.

Come out, Yell, fire off a round,

even if it's a .22,

they are gone.

Case in point,

I have several 'heavy' rifles.

Lived in N. Atlanta,

heard someone outside,

Took my Browing BAR 308

to the edge of the house,

yelled, fired off 2 rounds.

Was 'nuff.

Done, they never came back.

Yeah a 308 was excessive.

dam_n what a bang it makes.

That is my 500 meter gun.

AGAIN to the OP,

find the info for what it takes

for permit to even acquire a firearm.

Then go thru the paperwork.

It is difficult.

If confronting a perp,

in your home, here,

no warning, just blast away till dead.

No Mercy.

Howto, the police gave me the exact same advice. Since then I have gotten a gun license.

However, they did add one thing. Pop a few rounds into the roof and say that you fired a few warning shots first but he kept coming...

dam_n,

I just told wife 'bout this thread...

she brings me a paper bag,

With a absolutly perfect, pristine,

Stainless Colt Combat Commander .45 ACP.

Goddamn nice.

<deleted>, it's a 1990 version.

No more about this here.

Well, dissambled for inspect.

Barrel is perfect,

I say less than 25 rounds.

Has a

- full length stainless guide rail

- A McKormic Barrel locker

- Hogue Grips

- Recoil spring looks to be heavy duty,

certainly not stock.

- firing pin is perfect.

No signs of wear anywhere

IT DOES NOT HAVE

THAT NASTY THAI STAMP ON THE FRAME.

I suspect it is illegal...

told the wife to remove it from my home.

Well, wife is really pissed that I told her to remove it,

but I have the reason it's here.

Was dating wife in the late '80's during college.

Took her and friends to the range.

Somchai (not real name) really got into it.

I showed him where I purchase firearms...

he first got a 9mm glock.

Later, in 1991, I went with him to the shop,

he bought this Stainless Combat commander.

I tried to talk him out of it, as not worth the price.

He does not care, and buys it.

He ships this to Thailand, likely Ocean (my guess)

In December he comes to Thailand, collects his shipment.

Gives it to his father.

Father passes away during these holidays.

Bummer.

There is no mother.

There are no sibilings.

He inherits everything.

He stashes the unit there in the house.

NOTE: Then 1990, He has a job in the US paying 80K/year

2012, Sumchai returns,

wants to sell all the proprities.

Problem is this unit.

He likely makes 150K USD, for a while.

does not include the Thai assets.

Now, one can buy this firearm for sub 900 USD.

Seems he does not care and no time to mess with this.

He simply gives the unit to wife.

Oh well, the wife REALLY wants to keep this...

(she luvs 45s)

but I refuse and want it off the property

till I can find a way to make it legal.

If I cannot, then I will

take a gas-axe and blade to it.

I will not allow it to be be sold,

regardless that the THAI market lists it at 80K THB.

And a legal one goes for 120K THB.

I DON'T CARE.

OP,

I apologise for

taking your thread off-topic.

Back to the point...

take the wifey to

the local police station

tell them to show her,

and let her shoot,

the common firearms as

- 38

- 9mm

- 45

Of course you have to pay them a bit.

Then wifey can decide.

There is a good chance that

after hearing the bang

and feeling the recoil

She may decide not to do it.

While there, be sure

to get a cost of the ammo per round.

It's really expensive

... most Thais are Keno(cheap).

Let her know the cost of the firearm too.

funny how people are going into extreme detail about there experience with guns, the kind of details that are really not even of any help to the op but are posted more to say hey look at me i fired a pistol once, how bigs your @#$@

There are basic, intermediate and advanced (including shooting under duress, night and low light shooting, etc.) courses at the army gun range on Soi Latplakao 15 in Bangkok. Incidentally it's where I met my wife as well. Ten years and several thousand rounds fired later and we haven't killed anyone on accident or on purpose yet. Still probably not the best house to jiggle the doorknobs at or deliver a pizza to late at night.

:)
