Just wondering , why do we still need to apply for re-entry visa even we've got permanent residence?

Also it seems not a lot of immigration officers (those who work behind the counter) do not know what they need to do . Case in point , took the wife and kids for a short holiday to Hong kong .

When leaving Thailand , the officer took ages to stamp on my passport ,that was after I showed him the BLUE Book , The BROWN BOOK (those who got PR would know what I am talking about).and when arrived back from Hong Kong , each time they have to consult somebody senior before they know what to do.

This is ridiculous , in Britian or Usa , you do not need this re-entry visa , btw it costs more than 5000 baht for a multiple one. Also two years ago , wife and kids had to go to Canada holiday without me for the first day cos forgot to bring along the blue and brown books . According to the Highest ranking officer there at the time , if I leave without stamping on those books, my PR will be revoked , so I missed the flight and henceofrth the connecting flights as well.

So I am still wondering , what is the point of going through all the hassles to get the PR status.

Your thoughts ?

It is as the officer at the airport told you.

It is not a re-entry permit, (although it funcitons the same), it has a different name and different price. Leaving the country with a PR sure isn't easy and it is advisable to always have a valid "re-entry permit" incase you do need to travel in an emergency.

"So what does Permanent Residence entitle you ?"

You went to all the trouble and cost and you don't know?

I'd guess that the typical immigration officer doesn't deal with PR's too often.
