Just a quick note to thank Scouse and GU22 for all their advice. My TG got her 6 month tourist visa in mid Jan but I've only just got round to posting this as I've been extremely busy.

Everybody advised her that a 6 month tourist visa is very difficult to get but I didn't want to go down the route of fiance or marriage at this early stage. Scouse and GU22 advised the tourist visa based on my circumstances and emails I'd sent them with more details.

I would also like to thank the people who put together the suggested pack for the embassy. I had everything that was suggested including a covering letter. My concerns for rejection were she didn't have a job to come back to and doesn't own any land/property - hence the "reason for return" rejection is often given.

My girlfriend was only asked 2 questions which she answered honestly:

1/ Why do you want to go to England?

2/ How long you want to go for?

It seems that if you've got all the required documentation then you have a good chance of getting the visa, but I guess there is an element of luck as you want to catch the officer on a good day!!

(incidentally my original postings on here regarding visa's were under my friends username "mightone")

Once again thanks to everyone for all their help and good luck.

We didn't we just decided to go for it and give honest answers if asked. When asked why she wanted to visit UK, she replied holiday and when asked how long she said April although she got given a 6 month visa.

My wife got hers no worries. In for 2 hours while i stood out side smoking with another guy whos wife was applying also. She came out and said pick up her passport on the following Tuesday. Piece of piss. Though she had heaps of documents, pics etc. She wasnt asked to show too much. But always better to have more than enough. It also helps that she has a good job and had a letter from her employer and i also had a letter from mine. Hence reasons to return to LOS. Congrats on your visa.

Which confirms what I have believed to be the case ever since the "no switching" rule was brought in. That is, if the ECO is satisfied that the relationship is genuine and therefore the reason for the visit is genuine; then not having a concrete reason to return is not a huge problem. The ECO believes the applicant to be genuine and so trusts them to return. Although this belief may be backed up by getting the applicant to sign an undertaking to return.
