Disease Control Dept to encourage teens to carry condoms

The Nation

BANGKOK: -- Parents are being encouraged to allow daughters of secondary school age to carry two condoms to prevent STDs and teenage pregnancy, Disease Control Department chief Dr Pornthep Siriwanarangsan said Thursday.

He cited the results of a study, which showed that 20 per cent of Mathayom 2 students, 40 per cent of Mathayom 5 students and 5060 per cent of vocational students were having sexual relations.

Pornthep went on to say that 42 per cent of STDs patients were individuals under the age of 20, and the cause was mainly down to unprotected sex. Of these, 80 per cent were also pregnant. The department thus would campaign for teenagers, male and female, to carry condoms. He suggested that parents of secondary students give their adolescents two condoms a day and said parents could buy condoms or acquire them from health offices because the department procured 60 million condoms a year to hand out.

With Thailand now reporting 12,000 new HIV positive cases per year or 9 or 12 cases per hour, Thai Red Cross Society secretary general Phaen Wannamethee urged people to have their blood tested.

Free blood tests would be available at five Bangkok malls (The Mall Ngam Wong Wan, The Mall Bang Kapi, The Mall Bang Khae, Central Rama II and Central Rama III) from November 30 to December 1, as to mark World Aids Day on December 1, he said. The test result would be available in one hour, he added, pointing out that early detection meant early treatment, keeping the virus count in the blood low thus prolonging longevity.

Thailand had 500,000 people living with HIV. Some 200,000 didn't receive treatment out of ignorance of their condition and thus failed to take care of their health until they became ill, Public Health Minister Pradit Sinthawanarong said. He added that the universal healthcare subscribers were entitled to two HIV blood tests per year.

Not effective, unless the girl holds hers tightly between the knees and refuse to let go unless the guy wears his.

Condom vending machines have been removed from Bangkok-based schools supervised by the city administration following complaints from parents who cited necessary provocation of sexual interests to students as the reason, deputy city clerk Pheeraphong Saichua said yesterday.

Shock horror, reducing free availability of condoms for people causes pregnancy and STD's to spread.

Well well. I received a telephone call from the school principal the other day saying that I should not walk around my own house at the crack of dawn without wearing a shirt because it was not Thai culture and on that particular day the bus assistant was upset as she saw me when the kids opened the door to go out to the bus. Having sex is obviously Thai culture and I am glad that someone has the sense to realise that Thai culture is not all it is cracked up to be given all the corruption, deceit and idiocy that surrounds. Not to mention the fact that any Thai girl having a drink or worse dinner with a guy is asking for sex and if she gets raped afterwards then it cannot be rape for the very fact she shared a drink. Not that asking your rapist to slip on a condom would necessarily go down very well but I guess you can hope!

I would like to hear your reply to the principal. It is definately not in Thai culture to interfere into people's private lives.

5060 percent of vocational students having sex!!! <deleted>!!!

Doesn't anyone at the Nation check what is printed?

"With Thailand now reporting 12,000 new HIV positive cases per year or 9 or 12 cases per hour,"

12,000 HIV+ cases a year is approx 1.4 per hour NOT 9-12.

Not worth believing anything you read in Thai newspapers!

Least of all the "known" infection rate for HIV in Thailand. A little bird from the medical profession in Chonburi tells me, that the real "known" rate is a lot lot higher than anyone dares to admit.

I invariably do not wear a shirt at home, school bus arriving or not. The only exception being Tuesdays, when the school assistant is a little darling, and then I not only wear a decent shirt, but also comb my hair!

So far, the question of whether to use a condom or not has sadly not arisen!

That raises the question if it's mandatory for those students to use two condoms per day then? Could put some pressure on the poor lads.

Truly frightening stats if true. You would definitely think long and hard about a bit of apparently harmless fun on the beach.

While the Disease Control department may have a good idea regarding condoms, there will not doubt be another department that feels differently resulting in not much getting accomplished to help fight disease and unwanted pregnancy when it comes to young people who are going to have sex regardless.

While I agree people need to be informed and take precautions it is interesting to note that transmission of HIV from a female to a male under normal conditions (such as you don't have a cut on your penis) during vaginal intercourse is not common though certainly possible (don't roll the dice). The campaign that needs to be done should focus more on the women and working girls & boys in the sex industry who seem to be less educated about the subject than their colleagues were years ago when Thailand made a huge reduction in infections through education programs but somehow it seems like the subject once again has become a little taboo.

So what the 'Ministry' is saying is the promiscuous teens are dirty little buggers with STD's. w00t.gif Use a few drops of sheep dip after intercourse... gets the side walkers, lice, ticks ... The use of condoms of course, should be encouraged!

You can almost see teh cabinet meeting -

Desease Control says hand out condoms, keep the kids safe,

Culture replies with sex outside of marriage in not 'Thai', they're bad people, jail them.

Interior says police are overworked counting existing back handers but will accept the chance for more backhanders

Education says 'we did a program of sex education a few years back, our work is done'.

It looks like only the ministry of defence has no part in this discussion.
