It could simply be that the guy had a drinking problem.

I do know that when foreigners visit Thailand for the first time from colder climates, that the heat and the alcohol can have the serious affect of depleting sugar levels in the body to dangerously low levels, causing severe dehydration, coma, heart attack and even death in some cases.

It`s true, drinking alcoholic drinks can cause dehydration. It is advised to drink plenty of water and to eat a snack, something to soak up the alcohol prior to heavy drinking.

I hardly ever commit suicide, be it by drinking or any other means. But there was a period - say thirty-some to twenty years ago i had the feeling I was doing it on a regular basis in Thailand: For a young man with both romantic and idealistic notions of life in the LOS, I think the most difficult concept to fathom was also the concept I most admired in the Thai people. Their ability to live in the present. Farangs keep admiring this ability and forget/do not understand that for us who have an inborn/cultural need to make plans, follow up on other things than only family - meeting a loving, beautiful creature only living in the present is in fact living with heaven and hell multiple times I day! I gave up on committing suicide a long time ago, never drank Hong Tong, and have been admiring the stars and staring into the simmering pools of hell the last 20 years with a stable mind, knowing I will always be surprised, sometimes negatively but mostly positively - because I still enjoy surprises!

I was ignorant, romantic and idealistic. And survived. What we see now is a lot of people arriving in Thailand - and thinking because they have the means - they can bring their own comfort zone with them. All they have to do is pay. And pay they do! May "Ivan" RIP.

It is possible to die in repose. 5 years ago i suffered a Sudden Cardiac arrest. One moment I was talking to my friends, the next thing I knew is I was surrounded by people and my clothes had been cut off. I was lucky, in that I was fishing and had not been feeling well, and had gone to the emergency room which was an hour away to get checked out. 10 minutes after arriving, my heart stopped. I now have an implanted cardiac device that would shock my heart back into normal rhythm if it occurs again. I felt no pain or sensation at all during the event. Sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) can kill with no warning.

Hate myself for this, but I tried and cannot find anything in your comments to disagree with.

Some years ago it was possible to find sincere love and real romance in Thailand, I know, I was there. I had many close American and English friends who met lovely Thai girls either in Farangland or in Thailand. Married and took them back to their own countries. Some of the guys are now in they’re 50s, 60s and even 70s and still living happily with their Thai wife’s. Have nice family homes together, kids, grandchildren and all that goes with it.

But it seems today that attitudes have dramatically changed and now it`s business first than pleasure afterwards and the Thai wives have become the tied wives, meaning they are a partnership with the cash and once the money runs out, they too run out.

I just don`t believe anymore that choosing Thai women as long term girlfriends or wives is a viable proposition, or as the wise man says; buyer beware.

Probably just a sad sign of the times.

Probably anywhere else in the world you would be correct, but not in Thailand. It's the same risk no matter what the girls background. I lived there almost 20 years, but not anymore, so I do know a thing or two. There are good girls, maybe 2% at the best. I have known well educated women with good jobs who are just the same as the worst scheming bar girl.

The rule is if she is Thai believe nothing she tells you.

While most of these girls chose their profession by way of their own circumstances and choices ... we should realize it is their experience and exposure to men that has resulted in their views of men and their screw before being screwed attitude. And I would think after time that people giving you money to be with you would cause some issues in terms of relating somebody with wanting or caring about you to what they are willing to pay you. Certainly not a slam at all men but just consider the men they are exposed to daily and you might understand how they might start to believe men cannot be trusted and are mostly selfish, cheating liars. Really not much different than guys who post here who believe Thai women are somehow genetically programmed different than other women and not able to love and only care about money ... they too have just been exposed to a segment of women that are causing them to believe things are true about the rest of women. Bottom line is if you spend your time with hookers anywhere, you are going to develop a different set of views about women.

Unfortunately that equation seems so true - regardless of the background of the Thai lady. Boyfriends and husbands are providers. Loose the ability to provide for gf, wifey and family and its "bye bye farang". So sad - but seems the norm here.

Also happens to Thai guys, but I think not at such a high rate as farangs. I have first hand knowledge of this.

A country of peasants, cheating and corruption the norm, dismal education, money seen as paramount would produce such a society. There certainly good people also.

The above understandably creates an abundance females looking for money and farangs are a "soft target" I did some testing of dating sites. Profile A, cannot speak thai, new or not long living here. A lot more responses than Profile B; reasonable spoken and written language, very very few responses.

Once I wrote " Looking for attractive female to take care, condo, and car included" = many replies.

So what has wisdom taught me? Get a dog, a hobby or learn the language and get a non money seeking regular female friend.

Not strictly correct.

Farangs in Thailand have commited suicide by beheading themselves, running themselves over with vehicles, stabbing themselves multiple times, throwing themselves out of high storie buildings, shooting themselves in the back while out and about or driving and of course not forgetting the old favourite, chemically poisoning themselves in hotels.

No farangs are ever murdered or have ever died from any negligent acts caused by others in Thailand. It`s been proven by the police.

Why is it so shocking to come to the realization that many women in a poor country that offers little opportunity for them to be financially independent would want to be with a financially successful man who provides for them? Is this unheard of in any country? Would all the overweight and over age farangs prefer if their main concern was body and looks? Oh wait, do you want them all to be like most of us men are and not care about looks, body type, age or anything else except if they have a good heart (minus the part of looking down on, distrusting and wanting to control the opposite sex) and of course not ever cheat with another women who poses qualities we desire?

A guy chooses to off himself and like most any topic that a Thai women is mentioned in the story, there seems to be those who have to find a way to generalize about Thai women negatively even though a good portion of these men are here because it is one of the few places to go where they can still hook up with young hot women and yet they still find a way to moan and groan and see the negative. Maybe it is just me but it seems the men complaining in this scenario that are the ones that need to address their own issues more so than pointing out the faults of women.

Not the norm in all cases though, my Thai wife supports me and will be until I drop. I started her up in business which took off many years ago. Since then I have not spent 1 baht, She provides everything from her salary 250k a month.

Well, the stats you want are out there if you want to find them but can assure you neither Thailand nor these cities have the highest suicide rates and in fact western countries such as the US, Australia and many European nations have much higher rates of suicide ... including Russia (isn't this guy Russian?) which rates as having one of the highest suicide rates in the world. How about take a city like Las Vegas were for every 100,000 people, 35 off themselves yearly.

Please realize your news sources while in Thailand. They are geared to reporting anything of interest to fellow farangs. Have you seen many new stories re-posted here about Thai suicides even though any reasonable person would know their numbers far out weigh those of farangs. Yet, we will continue to see the never ending posts here whenever a farang dies that it must be a cover-up and whenever a farang commits a crime here it is a set-up ... we know this because farangs don't do these things back in their home country and Thailand is a country known for mostly only attracting the highest quality of tourists.

It is the same scenario of exposure ... if the only girls we interact with are hookers then we are going to need to remind ourselves that we can only speak generally about hookers and not apply hooker traits to all women.
