IT should have been a dream holiday on an island paradise – but for Jack Cole and girlfriend April Clifton, their trip to Thailand ended in a nightmare.

On a romantic stroll one evening, the pair were pounced on by a gang of eight thugs riding mopeds.

Jack was pelted with lumps of concrete and rocks and stabbed more than six times with a machete as he fought desperately to protect April, fearing she would be raped.

He could feel his life ebbing away.

“I was panting like a dog,” he recalls. “My heart was struggling to pump blood. I could physically feel myself draining and slipping away.”

Four weeks on, the couple are still haunted by the gang’s callous laughter as they staggered to safety.

Thailand has been a favourite with backpackers for years, and increasingly for families and couples seeking an affordable, exotic break.
