Hi folks am visiting Thailand for between 35 and 40 days so was wondering is it best to just get a tourist Visa before I visit of can easily extend the 30 day on arrival visa while I am there?

Best to get a tourist visa or airline may not allow boarding. Not more than 7 days would be available with extension in any case.

As said you need a Visa before travelling or face being refused entry to the flight.

Normally I only stay 28 days but once I had a 6 week trip and the airline (United) didn't even mention it (I stay on a visa waiver program). I would suggest getting the visa if possible but you could always ask your travel agent to create a dummy itinerary showing you flying to say Singapore before your 30 day visa expires then just do a short visa run to Cambodia while your here.
