Hi,

I would like to know if i can adopt my Thai wifes 6 year old son.

I'm moving back to the UK soon and will be applying for a visa for my wife and step son to come and live with me as soon as i can meet all the visa requirements.

My step sons father has had nothing to do with him at all, not even met him or paid any child support. My wife can still contact the father and she's sure there won't be problem getting his permission if it's needed?

If i can adopt him would he be able to get dual Thai / British nationality and a British passport?

Has anyone else on TV adopted their Thai step child?

Any advice is appreciated.

Thanks,

Jim.

You would need to adopt the child under the law of both the UK and Thailand, which makes it a longer procedure. But it can be done.

You will need permisison from the boys father to adopt him, but if the father doesn't want to cooperate a judge can give permision to go ahead anyway.

There should be some threads in this section of the forum that will give you some more information. Just use the search function.

Hi All

I also am very interested in adopting my wife's 7 year old daughter. We have had 2 other children in out 5 year marriage but I keep getting negative feed back about adopting my step daughter.

I understand her natural father has no objections and is fact not on her birth certificate.

What is the process?

Can we do it ourselves and how do we start?

Probably have to pay a lawyer a high fee....!!!!

Any accurate info would be appreciated.

I adopted my wife's son. It was quite a long process (about 2 years) but got there in the end.

As I understand it, adoption in Thailand is not sufficient for UK citizenship purposes and if I wanted him to become a UK citizen, it would involve us having to relocate to the UK and applying for his indefinite right to remain in the UK before his 18th birthday. As this probably isn't something we want to do at this stage, we didn't investigate it any further.
