Hello

Does this service exist in CM?

Are they in banks or private companies?

How safe and Is their insurance available and issued by whom? Prices/monthly rates?

Thanks very much.

First you must hold a bank account with the bank you intend to rent a strong box, but can use any branch.

No insurance. Your valuables are as secure as the bank is secure.

600 baht per year.

All the big banks (BBL, KBANK, SCB, TMB) have safe deposit boxes, but not at all branches, only the bigger branches. I know KBANK at Chang Puek has them. The two TMB at Chang Puek have them. SCB near the night bazaar has them. All had unrented ones early in the year; however, the aforementioned KBANK and TMB have no more for rent. I have not checked the SCB at the night bazaar.

I believe the rent range from a B1,000 plus for the small one and B2,000 plus for the biggest one per year. The biggest one measures about 10x20x8 (WxLxD) in inches - a very rough estimate.

As for insurance I'm as curious as you to know.

I recently checked out the safe deposit boxes at a KBANK branch in Bo San. It's all full but the lady said there might be some available at the end of the year as the boxes are mostly rented out to companies to keep some important documents, it's quite unlike Bangkok where people store gold and jewelry. How did she know that? I asked to see the boxes. She took the keys out and led me to see the boxes. She did not ask my ID nor have me signed. She herself did not need any clearance. I also observed there were no surveillancecams there. Anyway, we walked to the area where there was an iron gate that was locked. Once inside afer the iron gate was opened there was this big steel vault door with steel turning handles. This one was not even locked. The lady couldn't pull it open because it was heavy and I had to help. Once opened, there were about 20 boxes all contained in what llooked like a metal cabinet in a locker room. I thanked her and left. I think this place lacks security measures as regard to visitors, employess, and surveillance cameras. The iron gate and the steel vault door are good only if they are all locked. Furthermore, they should have a better setup for the boxes rather than one looking like a metal cabinet in a locker room.

Just saw the post from Beetlejuice where he mentions B600 per year. Frankly, I never did ask about the small ones, I had only asked the big ones. In 2010, I paid about B1,400 per year at TMB, KBANK. In 2011, TMB had increased it to B2,400. I haven't checked KBANK if they had also increased but I guess they must have too. That's in Bangkok! But I did also ask SCB near the night bazaar in CM early in the year what it cost. It was about B2,000 for their latest big ones. I asked KBANK about the boxes and the manageress asked me what I was going to store in it. That scared me a bit and I shied away from asking more questions.

I've been on waiting lists at 2 different banks for almost 2 1/2 years now. At Kasikorn Bank, the lady showed me the list and I was like number 98 on the list...

Many Thais have 5-10 or more boxes per family where they store gold, amulets, jewelry, etc. They retain them for generations or until the banks move. There is a shortage of them available.

It's sad in Thailand. They need A private company to start A safe deposit box system/insured etc.

I don't see it happening.Just like the other posts say.You could be on the waiting list for years.

Maybe purchase A heavy safe, bolted down.Or keep your valuables in your home country.

Maybe a good business start up?

The problem I face immediately will be 6 months or so of rented house while I build my own; so pondering the heavy safe in house vs bank route for the middle period. I don't like the sound of the bank security standard to be honest, but will investigate further upon arrival.

Thanks for all the replys.

Bangkok bank Gad Suan Kaew have save deposit boxes and i have had mine their over 10 years with no problem. They are in the bank safe/vault very safe i would say. The bank hold a key and you hold the other key.You have to put your key in the box at the same time as the bank and must unlock at the same time.

I asked there. They told me the queue was at least 18 months - maybe longer. The demand was high.
