AIT senate chief's contract pulled

Suriyan Panyawai

The Nation

BANGKOK: -- The president of the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) announced last week that he was revoking the new employment contract of the chairman of the institute's Academic Senate.

President Prof Said Irandoust wrote to Jayant Kunmar Routray on November 30 saying that he had revoked his new employment contract, which was to go into effect from January 1, 2013 until December 31, 2016.

The contract was pulled even though AIT executives had unanimously approved it in October. This decision comes after the Academic Senate resolved recently to call on the president to step down and take responsibility for the problems about AIT's legal status and certification degrees issued to its students.

The current chairperson's contract wraps up at the end of this month.

Representatives of the alumni and AIT lecturers visited the Foreign Ministry yesterday to protest after the ministry's permanent secretary reportedly allowed the president to reduce the agenda of a meeting between the ministry and the AIT's former board of trustees from seven items to two. The meeting is scheduled for Wednesday.

An AIT source said the representatives wanted the agenda for the meeting to be increased to five. The two issues currently on the agenda include discussions about the degree-related problems and the AIT management's budget request. Among the issues struck off the agenda were discussions on the selection of the new president and executives.

Meanwhile, in a statement through his personal communications team, Said claimed that the meeting on Wednesday called by Shinichiro Ohgaki, chair of the former board of trustees, was not valid because Ohgaki was not part of the current board of trustees. He said the only people who were allowed to hold a meeting with the ministry were current board members Tej Bunnag and Jean-Pierre Verbiest.

Villagers set to sue IEAT

Pongphon Sarnsamak

The Nation

RAYONG: -- Some 114 local residents in Rayong's Map Tha Phut district have decided to file a lawsuit against the Industrial Estate Authority of Thailand (IEAT), demanding that it give them Bt160 million in compensation for environmental and health damages caused by industrial development.

Suthi Atchasai, leader of the Eastern People's Network, said the group was planning to take the case to the Administrative Court by February. The network is working on its claim and collecting evidence to show how people's health has been affected by the industrial development from the Map Ta Phut Industrial Estate.

Local villagers hope to be given at least Bt1.4 million each in compensation.

In 2009, the Supreme Administrative Court issued an injunction to suspend 65 industrial projects in Map Ta Phut Industrial Estate on grounds that they negatively affected the health of residents and the environment.

IEAT governor Weerapong Chaiperm said his agency had been strictly controlling environmental conditions and had reduced the air pollution caused by the Map Ta Phut Industrial Estate over the past several years.

"The state of the environment in this area has improved already and factories in the estate no longer pollute the environment," he said.

He went on to say that his agency had also implemented mitigating measures and had made the area a pollution-control zone over the past five years.

Similarly, in 2003, some 200 people in Lampang's Mae Moh district had filed a lawsuit against Egat, demanding a compensation of Bt1 million each for the health damage caused by its coal power plant. In 2009, the Chiang Mai Administrative Court ordered the agency to pay up, but Egat appealed and the case is currently with the Supreme Court.

Temperatures in Thailand to drop by 2-3 degree Celsius

BANGKOK, Dec 8 -- The temperature all over the country is expected to drop by 2-3 degrees Celsius while typhoon “Bopha” was seen weakening and would have no impact on weather in Thailand.

The Meteorological Department said that another active high pressure system from China extended to northeast of Thailand, leading to cooler weather by 2-3 degrees Celsius in the North, the Northeast, the Central and the East.

According to a report from Lamphun province, thick fog has covered a wide area, while the temperature this morning dropped to a recorded low of 17 degrees Celsius.

At the top of the mountain, the temperature was between 6-12 degree Celsius.

Meanwhile, typhoon "Bopha" in the South China Sea, due west of Luzon, the Philippines, is slowly moving northeast. It is forecast to decline and dissipate in a few days with no influence expected on Thailand. (MCOT online news)
