Heard there are problems with the water supply in Pattaya. Can anybody give me an insight into which areas are affected and how residents overcome the problems.

There still appears to be roving water shortages, as the city cuts off water to certain areas for maybe a day, day and a half at a time. The last time it was cut off in my (South Pattaya) neighbourhood was almost 2 weeks ago, lasted about 1 day. I keep a small garbage pail of water by the toilet, just in case.

Hotels, business and some residential complexes buy water of dubious quality from various local suppliers (who supposedly fill up their water trucks from the same resevoir that the city is restricting supplies from. Or they fill their trucks from what ever pond or ditch looks wet enough to fill their truck).

The city/region is supposed to be taking steps to fix the problem. One plan is to build a pipeline to bring water from nearby sources to replensih the main resevoir. Another plan to ease the short-term problem is to pump recycled waste water into the system (in other words, treated sewer water).

Not a big problem as long as you only use the tap water for showering and flushing the hong nam. Use bottled water to brush your teeth and for making coffee.

It depends who you talk to about water shortage, the official view is that there is no shortage!

My neighbours in East Pattaya would disagree, they have been buying water on and off for the past month or so, despite all the reassurances that there would be no shortage this year. Personally I never believed them and had a well drilled last year.

Most - not all - of the trucks delivering water have a well that they use to fill up there trucks.

Cheers

I drove past Maprachan lake this morning and it's nowhere near full which does not look good for the coming dry season.

I just got back to my shop from the gym and read this thread.

I thought I better go and fill the dustbin up that I used for most of last year to guarentee water for the toilet. :D

I went upstairs to have a shower and the #@$%$ water is of for the first time in ages. :D

Talk about tempting fate :o

Murphy's Law. Things are going great so you don't fill the pail. Then suddenly one day, bloop, no water.

It would be nice if the city at least put out a schedule of what areas are going to be affected on which dates.

But then again, this is the same city that denies there even is a problem !

The other option is, keep the pail filled and let the mosquitos breed for weeks.

About a week ago I bought a plastic 'bin' from Big C in South Pattaya for water storage. About 24" in height with a 16" diameter: 110 Baht as I recall.

So what, you might say, but this one has clips that secure the lid so hopefully mossies should not be a problem. :D

Noel beat me to it but I would have thought the answer was obvious anyway, put a lid on it. :D

Well, that's you set up for the coming Summer then Noel :o

Actually my pail has a lid as well, and is blue. I think the mossies are coming up through the shower drain in the bathroom, along with an awful sewer smell depending on the weather :D

I had the same problem with sewer smell coming up through the shower drain and had a plastic drain cover fitted which has an inbuilt water trap which stops the smell, I understand they are available at most hardware stores, also the grille on the top can be detached for cleaning.

I actually went for green, although I would be interested to see a mosquito bite its way through such a bin, whatever the colour. :D

PS. Are you Thai, CGW? I guess you must be, as surely it would be most odd for a farang to wai another farang. :D

Some people have bought big tanks with pumps conected to the mains so that when the water is on they pump water into this tanks to use later when the water is turned off. I just use the big plastic bins with a lid but a black & green colour. :o
