Caregiving

Featured Replies

I need to hire a caregiver for my mother in thailand I woud prefer a nurse what are my option and what should I expect tp pay for a full time live-in caregiver

Ohhh, I thought you were giving away your car.

Sorry, could not resist that one.

Joke aside, I think you should be very careful and do a lot of research before you hire domestic help here.

Im sure some of the members here can help.

Clever question. Paying for someone in Thailand to take care of your mother is surely 10 times cheaper then letting someone take care of her in the west.

But this is an unlikely situation because your mother is already in Thailand. Most western mothers live in the.. west. This does not take away that I think this is a very good and new idea! But you have to do your homework first. And i think here is a good place to start.

Good luck!

What kind of visa will your mother stay on?

Just curious.

Is your mother Thai or a westerner? You can get caregivers from local hospitals. It's more expensive than hiring one on your own, but you would be dealing directly with the hospital instead of directly with an individual. A bit more security.

I've heard amounts of "around" 20k Baht a month...or so. I'm taking care of my 87 year old mother and we just use our full time maid. But nothing health related is required. Just feeding, bathing, and looking after during the day. Relatively easy work.

Let's move this topic over to the health forum.

Where do you live in Thailand? What condition is your mother in? What is your budget?

So now i think you where a cook in the army.

Patton: Thirty years from now, when you're sitting around your fireside with your grandson on your knee and he asks you, "What did you do in the great World War II," you won't have to say, "Well... I shoveled shit in Louisiana."

Actually I wasn't there but I like that quote.

I was just trying to help the guy. It is a good idea to take care of mom in Thailand. I wished I would have done it. I spent a fortune taking care of her in the states. It wrecked my marriage and finances. I should have bundled her up and off to Thailand. I could have afforded a big house and staff of four people for what I paid for one room in a Stateside nursing home. The way it works in the US is one has to spend down the assets of a parent until they are a pauper and then the State takes over.

Without giving details of what is required its pretty hard to give an answer.

The cheapest I have heard of in Thailand is 3,500 baht per month, plus free food and lodgings.

This is my next door neighbour in Bkk, her mother lives in Ayuttaya and its just basically somone to clean the house and cook, the mother doesnt need full time care.

Round the corner from me there is a day care centre that costs 5,000 baht per week, the people are dropped off in the morning and picked up in the evening.

The same place also has about 3 or 4 people living in full time but didnt read the costs.

Is your mother Thai, can she speak Thai, where are you located, are you married? What about wifes family?

Why the need for a nurse?

How ill is your mother, what the level of care required?

It works the same in the Netherlands, the same happened to my grandparents. Pension pension was not enough for the nursing home so we had to sell the house etc... It is a very delicate issue because in a way we where being forced to use their assets this way as well. I think that idea is not so bad but the problem is i cannot bundle my mother up now and send her off.. It is just not her thing.
