JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA (BNO NEWS) -- Anti-apartheid icon Nelson Mandela underwent a successful procedure on Saturday morning to remove gallstones, a week after he was hospitalized for a lung infection, a spokesman for South African President Jacob Zuma said.

Presidential spokesman Mac Maharaj said doctors discovered earlier this week that Mandela had developed gallstones, which are hard, pebble-like deposits that form inside the gallbladder. It is in addition to a recurrence of a previous lung infection which had previously been made public.

"The medical team decided to attend to a lung infection before determining when to attend to the gall stones," Maharaj said in a statement, which referred to Mandela by his Xhosa clan name. "This morning, the former president underwent a procedure via endoscopy to have the gall stones removed. The procedure was successful and Madiba is recovering."

Mandela, 94, was hospitalized on December 8 at 1 Military Hospital near South Africa's executive capital, Pretoria. Zuma previously said the anti-apartheid icon was "recuperating" from the lung infection, but a lack of information has caused growing concern among many South Africans.

"Madiba is recuperating from a lung infection at a Pretoria hospital. We wish him a speedy recovery and assure him yet again, of the love and support of many in the country and abroad," Zuma said Thursday while speaking at an airport in the South African judicial capital of Bloemfontein.

Before being elected as President, Mandela was a strong anti-apartheid activist and the leader of Umkhonto we Sizwe, the armed wing of the African National Congress. He spent 27 years in prison after being convicted and sentenced to life in prison on charges for sabotage and other crimes. Much of his prison term was served on Robben Island.

Mandela was released on February 11, 1990, and became president only four years later, leading the country with a multi-racial administration to end the apartheid. Mandela and Frederik Willem de Klerk were jointly awarded the 1993 Nobel Peace Prize for their work for the peaceful termination of the apartheid regime, and for laying the foundations for a new democratic South Africa.

On the news clips check out the attitude and body language of Mandela.

I think he has nothing but contempt for the cadre running the ANC at present, particularly that vermin Zuma.

Some think the clock is ticking for SA to become like Zimbabwe. Not while Mandela is alive sez me. Sad.

Thousands of succesfull white farmers have been murdered in South Africa. Never reported in the worlds media. Being white and working a succesfull productive farm is to be dispised by the selective media.

What counts as news is a very wealthy old man being turned into a god. Now would a South African government state care hospital be good enough to treat him.

Barrack Obama is the next media plugged God.

Ask any Thai if they have heard of Mandela.

With your "bwana" handle I note a certain preference in matters pertaining to Africa. If that is the case you are probably more than aware of the old saying, "what goes around, comes around". While not condoning any murders or attacks, a hundred years of servitude and subjugation will have its downsides. Africa has never been an easy place, that's its appeal and its threat.

Given the possible routes Mandela could have taken post his release from 27 years of imprisonment in 1990, he has played an amazingly straight bat and while no human can rank as a god, the words statesmanlike, magnanimous and probably unique today, are not inappropriate. Sadly he has been succeeded by very "small" men and the future for SAfrica is less positive than it was 20 odd years ago...

I think the whole medical emergency was staged by Zuma, he shows up at Mandela's house with an ambulance and kidnaps him ("he's delirious, get him into the ambulance for his own good!") and brings him to the hospital in the full glare of the press. Just days before the election, appearing next to The Great Man makes it look like an endorsement. Mandela was silent, I'm sure he was seething.

Future of SA not looking good. I like Tutu, he was the one that got Mandela out of prison, which was the first crack in the apartheid gov't. Once he's gone...
