Spare Yingluck from doomsday, 32% of Thais plead

The Nation

BANGKOK: -- Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra is the politician most Thais would like to see survive "doomsday" - which some people fear will arrive tomorrow due to ancient predictions made by the Mayan people of Central America - Suan Dusit Poll said yesterday.

The pollster surveyed 1,461 people between Wednesday last week and Tuesday.

Respondents hoped the following political figures would survive, in descending order of popularity: Yingluck (32.35 per cent); Democrat Party leader Abhisit Vejjajiva (19.48 per cent); former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra (12.86 per cent); Democrat chief adviser Chuan Leekpai (10.66 per cent); Rak Thailand Party leader Chuwit Kamolwisit (9.92 per cent); Deputy Prime Minister Chalerm Yoobamrung (9.19 per cent); and Chart Thai Pattana de facto leader Banharn Silapa-archa (5.54 per cent).

Some 8.57 per cent of respondents said the prediction was merely a rumour spread to scare people, while 7.81 per cent said they believed a natural phenomenon relating to the solar system would occur.

Asked, "Do you believe the world will end this Friday?" 92.45 per cent of respondents said no; 6.46 per cent said they "half-believed" it, thinking some event would occur to change the solar system but that it was unlikely to bring the end of the world.

Meanwhile, 1.09 per cent believed doomsday was upon us, because the Mayan people, who were experts in astronomy, identified it as the date of the end of the world.

Some 58.04 per cent said they would pray to be reborn into their old family in the next life; 31.16 per cent would pray that they would survive tomorrow and help to restore the world; and 10.80 per cent prayed that the Earth would survive and that there would be peace in the world.

When asked most ministers wished that the rice pledging scheme would continue into the next life .. cheesy.gif

As for Yinluck she's planning her own "doomsday" so she doesn't need any divine intervention from above.. she gets all the help she requires from "afar"

Pollsters make their living by doing polls and such polls help news reporters fill their weekly news quota. Without these ridiculous polls more people would be unemployed in Thailand. Polls are important!!!!---just ask any pollster and reporter.

Interesting that Yingluck is now three times more popular than her brother...... hmmm?

On a more serious note I am willing to bet anyone any amount of money the world will not end tomorrow.

The scary thing of course is how many Thais believe in unfounded superstition. Of course if they actually read instead of getting of getting their facts from Facebook they'd know that the current Mayan calendar cycle ends on the 21st December not the world.

Anyway...... to those accepting my wager all bets will be settled on the 22nd.

1. The mayans did not have leap years. By their calendars doomsday happened over 9 months ago.

2. Only one calendar made this prediction, many others did not.

3. All poll results are full of crap.

4. Only idiots believe in these predictions.

5. The only thing less credible than these predictions is a Nation opinion report.

6. Excepting the governments rice export policies and figures that is.

On the question whether they thought themselves as nitwits in answering such a poll, some 1.4% said they weren't sure, while 5.2% suggested they "half-believed" it and 11.6% insisted they were "absolutely positive" about it. The remaining 81.8% refused to answer such a question and felt offended, because it potentially could harm their image.
