My bike helmet absolutelty reeks from stale sweat. It's a closed face helmet and it's quite unpleasent to put on nowadays.

It is a decent make (Caberg), and my head is on the large size, so I don't want to buy a new one - this one was sent over from Scotland.

What is the best way to clean the inside, so I don't have to smell a weightlifter's jockstrap every time I put it on? :o

Thanks for any help

There was a thread on this a little while ago, I can't find it but maybe you can. I have a Shoei Syncrotec and the entire lining is detachable and washable so I don't have your problem, but there were some good ideas in the thread about how to keep your lid smelling sweet!

If it looks like the lining doesn't come out, don't try ripping it out. I would think a clean sponge soaked in fairly soapy water and wrung out, would help. Or, leave it out in the sun at noon. Don't use any strong chemicals such as petroleum-based, as they might eat the styrofoam.

If it smells like an old jockstrap, maybe you wore it as a supporter, in which case 'extra small' helmet size might be sufficient. :o

Have you tried tieing a bandana or neckerchief on your head so that sweat is absorbed by them.

I've seen a few polar masks for sale in bike shops (Stadium on Rachadapisek sells them). Maybe a bit too hot to wear fully but perhaps trimming one so that you only have the part that covers the top of your head might do the trick.

I've seen spray fresheners in TOPS for mc lids but it's probably just a shoe freshener spray in a different container.

What is the best way to clean the inside, so I don't have to smell a weightlifter's jockstrap every time I put it on?

Or........you could just tell your wieghtlifter friend to buy his own helmet. :o

I tried looking, but I couldn't find anything.

I've always found that its amazing what a little, soap, water, and elbow grease will do.

How do you manage to get the soap out that has been soaked up by the sponge lining?

When I think about - if I wore a jockstrap it would smell much worse than that manky helmet of mine :o:D:D:D

I looked as well Grant, and I couldn't find it either. Shame cos it had all sorts of remedies in it.

Here's a bit of useless info for you - Thais call Seagulls - Nok Nang Nuan - The Beautiful Lady Bird.

My wife loved all the seagulls in Aberdeen (she is thai - the seagulls were not) until she hung out clothes and they crapped all over them :o

Perhaps you should scrap the helmet and wear the Jock Strap on your head.

Could look quite fetching!! :o

Don't use a whole lot of soap, make it kind of diluted. After cleaning to your satisfaction by using a wet cloth to clean the pads, use a different cloth and press/squeeze out as much liquid as you can. Repeat the washing until the water comes out clean enough and the helmet smells ok. Then you can kind of dampen the lining again with water as kind of a rinse, and press out again. Some soap will be left, but hopefully it'll be nice smelling.

After that, put it somewhere where the liner will dry fast.

Thanks, that was what I was after!

Something similar to Fabreeze can be bought here from Lever Brothers it works well.

Is Febreeze safe to use with something that is pressed against sensitive skin?

Try it is cuts your washing in half.

A quick squirt and the shirts, underpants are good for another day.

Turn them inside out and get double the days.

I'm still not sure if anyone is really spraying Febreeze on their clothes :o
