Probably the earth did move for the couple next door. There was an earthquake in burma but a long way away and a bit earlier.

I'm reckoning earthquake tremors travel at somewhere around 800 - 2000 metres per second through the ground, depending on the terrain, so the timing that he felt would depend on his distance from the epicentre. I really can't be bothered looking up the data, as I don't care whether he felt the earthquake in Burma or not
