I was hoping to do a visa run and I need to be in Mudkahan early. I can get the train to Ubon which arrives at 3.35a.m. Is there any transport that will get me to to Mukdahan from Ubon by 8 or 9 a.m? Is a taxi my only option. What time to buses begin to run?

you did not say as from where-but the train comes from BKK. THus a direct overnight bus-choice of various classes direct to Mukd will be MUCH quicker , lve BKK later and arr Muk before 6.00-and cheaper too. as the combo. Also note that in Ubon the SRT-station is quite far out of town. And dont forget the inevitable hours delays on the SRT. In general buses start to run around 4/5.00 and peter out late afternoon for local runs.
