Alum Stone

Ask around in a market for "sarn som". You can buy it by the kilo and it will last years.

Rock crystal aluminium hydroxide ?

I guess potasium alum is the exact thing I will need, which is something different from what you advise.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alum

I actually need a few gram at the most, it just for stem blood from occasional shaving wounds, and I'm not suicidal biggrin.png

However I'm sure it must be available here as you will see in the wiki page that it's used in whitening creams, and since this is the HUB of whitening creams.

"sarn som" is exactly what you need whatever it's actual composition. It is sold in crystal form and traditionally used as both a water clarifier and anti-perspirant. Ask any Thai.

Maybe it is but Rock crystal aluminium hydroxide as you mentioned gives me this reult in wiki

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aluminium_oxide and which is something completely different from the link I posted, I think.

I bought this in friendship

post-32036-13564246421892_thumb.jpg

As you can see it has written on it in english "100% Natural Alum"

Thanks, that is exactly what I'm looking for.

and just FYI, that's the same thing that others are saying can be had in the markets for much cheaper. Mind you, you won't get an english label on it that says "100% Natural Alum" nor will it come in a nice package. But the product is the same.

But I understand that the thing in the market are crystals, while this is a stick which makes it much easier to apply.

How do you apply crystals ?

The one I showed in the picture is a crystal as well. It all depends on the size of the crystal. The ones sold in the markets are large crystals as well. Not ground up sugar sized crystals.

Thanks again, that explains a lot. I was actually of the thought that it were sugar sized crystals. Now if Changfai would return to this thread with directions as to where about in the Tuesday market the shop is located then I can have a look.Otherwise I will be the more expensive option of 40Bht at Friendship, but I think I can just manage that amount for a new years present to myself. biggrin.png

"Sarn Som" just means "alum".

In Thailand, you'll find ammonium alum "(NH4)Al(SO4)2·12H2O", which is used for water purification and as a deodorant.

What you are looking for (to stop the bleeding after shaving) is potassium alum "KAl(SO4)2·12(H2O)", which is neither made nor sold in Thailand (unless there is a new importer I am not aware of).

Anyway, you can try the Thai alum as recommended by some posters. It will give you an uncomfortable feeling and in fact, the warning on the exports to Europe say "do not apply to open wounds". I don't think it will stop the bleeding, but please report your experience!

Potassium Alum

Potassium alum is also known as potash alum or tawas. It is aluminum potassium sulfate. This is the type of alum that you find in the grocery store for pickling and in baking powder. It is also used in leather tanning, as a flocculant in water purification, as an ingredient in aftershave and as a treatment to fireproof textiles. It's chemical formula is KAl(SO4)2.

Is commonly found and used for manufacturer in Thailand.

For a discussion of the difference between Potassium Alum and Ammonium Alum with regards to shaving.. see these threads at badgerandblade (or search there for more)

So I guess what you bought in friendship might be potasium alum, and probably NOT the same as what is sold at the markets by kilogram.

yup maybe some are allergic to Thai alum........ I have used it for years on wounds et al ( not sure if it stops the bleeding/aids coagulation though?), mozzie bites( stops itching in minutes!),as a deodorant and a water clarifier..seems to be effective with no adverse reactions...Op could well try it ...nothing lost ?

If coming from Pattaya Tai, enter the market on the right hand side.

I think it was the second aisle from the right, and about halfway in.

Just a stall selling cosmetics etc.

Sorry I cant be more specific than this but you know what the market is like.

According to naval lore, I was told by a very old sailor, ladies in the P4P business used alum to keep their equipment taut thus enabling the less endowed to touch both sides at the same time.

Another thing he told me was "Son, when you pass Suez, all the rules change." He was dead right about that.

Hello, can you confirm that the one sold at Friendship and that is much easier to use is he one that can help to stop bleeding and relieve the skin ?

Any other better option ? I wonder if a kind a of betadine ointment could help or anything that we put on wounds ?

Thank you.
