I am married to a Thai National, 43 years old and hold a USA passport. I need to get a O Visa, will travel to Phnom Penh to do this but had a few questions first that maybe some of you veterans of the process could assist me with. This is what I have questions with;

1. Do you need an appt with the Thai embassy in Phnom Penh or is it walk-in? Some have told me make an appt however the website does not give that option

2. Copy of residence certificate (Carnet de Residence/ Family Record Book), Is this the Affidavit form that we get from the US Embassy (American Citizen Services)

3. I receive a pension each month from the US Military since i am retired, how much per month does it need to be? Does this need to be certified by the US Embassy? I would believe I just print out a copy of my monthly pay stub with my name on it?

4. Medical Certificate, once i get this does it need to be certified by the US Embassy?

5. Marriage Certificate, do they need the original or would a copy be sufficient?

6. Wife's "family book" with a signature on each page?? What is this?

Thanks guys, I just want to make sure i have everything that is needed prior to departing to Cambodia. Any advice is much appreciated.

What exactly are you trying to obtain in Cambodia? They will only issues a single entry non immigrant O visa at that location AFAIK and no medical would be required. Normal requirement is marriage certificate and copy of spouse ID card and home register (blue book that they are listed in). But any visa at that location normally takes 4 days to process so most use Vientiane or Savannakhet (for multi entry visa) in Laos. Are you intending to live in Thailand and use the 400k or 40k per month financials to extend your stay yearly? If so you can even obtain the required visa entry in that process if you have more than 15 days remaining on current stay (although it might be as easy to obtain from a Consulate). No you do not need appointment - you apply in morning and obtain (at most except PP) the next workday afternoon.

If you have the affadavit from the Embassy why not get an extension to your present visa from your local immigration office, saves you a trip

You can get a 60-day extension at immigration based on marriage ... need to go in with wife and copies of marriage contract, her ID, your passport and a photo. Based on personal experiences it seems you can do this an unlimited number of times but just need to do a border run in between each extension. ** no need for blue book or proof of income.

A Multiple entry Visa in Savannakhet, Laos is available and requires ....

Visa application form

2 passport photos with your name on the back and signed

photocopy of the front AND back of the original Kor Ror 3 Marriage certificate (there is a number on the back)

photocopy of the Kor Ror 2 Marriage Form (available at your Amphur office for 40B)

photocopy of your passport photo page

photocopy of wifes passport photo page

photocopy of wifes ID card

photocopy of wifes tabien baan (blue book)

cover letter in Thai from your wife kindly requesting visa so you may live with her in Thailand

make sure that you and your wife sign and date all photocopy above mention

5000 Baht fee , they will ask to inspect the Original Marriage Certificate

** No need to proof of income or savings in Laos ... also no need for medical

I am not sure if they give multiple entry in Vientiane but probably easiest to do this with a visa run company who can verify you have everything that is required at the given time to avoid any headaches.

If you do take a path that requires proof of income then you can get a letter from the US Embassy by just telling them how much you make a month.

Passport copy of wife is not required nor is KR2 or letter requesting visa (although good to have such a letter in case asked).

Definitely correct on the passport (i deleted an or between this and ID) -- but the other two items I have been told are required by folks who have made the trip to Savannakhet as well as by a visa run company (actually copied the list from an email from them) for the yearly multi-entry visa at Savannakhet . To be clear I have never done it but have been tempted to a number of times and have checked into it but have just found the extensions are more convenient for me. As for Vientiane, if I recall correctly, I believe the requirements are less strict but again not sure if they are giving out multi-entry or not.
