1 Year Ago Tonight, I Nearly Burned The Village Down.

Yep, Im not in Thailand this new years, and even if I was theres no more fireworks to be bought by me. Last year had my tuk tuk full of em. Just too cheap up country. Went to the FIL farm at the back of the village thought it was about the safest launching pad. I saved the biggest til last. It was massive. Buried it in the ground, lit the fuse and stood back and waited.....whoosh, up it went but it wasnt gaining enough height. Then the biggest bloody "BOOM" Ive ever heard. It had exploded way to low and proceeded to rain down burning debris which started a fire in the neighbours hay pile. I had visions of watching the whole village burn down. All I can hear is the neighbours 100 cows bells going crazy ready to stampede and the neighbours w00t.gif " nam nam lil lil". They put it out after a bit and the cows relaxed again but my heart was thumping, I had come so close to burning the whole village down well in my mind anyway. Grass roofs and dry wood everywhere and doubt any fire brigade would have done much if the fire had of spread. Never ever ever again will I buy fireworks in Thailand.

So, this year the only fire will be a bbq with friends here in Oz and a couple drinks to bring in the new year.

Happy new year to all....be careful if your buying fireworks!wai.gif

Warning people of the dangers of fireworks on Jan 2 and hoping they will remember it for 363 days is a bit much to ask.

Top story Krisb..stick to BBQ's in future , it's what Aussies do best.

Happy New Year to you.

Great story.

Reminds me of one of the funniest, but scary moments in my life.

My missus had one of those sticks that fire out about 10 fireworks one after the other, when the first one fired out she dropped the stick and it landed on the ground randomly firing fireworks at all the neighbours houses. under their cars, against loungeroom windows. It was dangerous but so <deleted> funny.

The neighbours were all at their windows, quickly closing their front doors whilst the neighbourhood exploding.

The missus has made me promise to never ever mention it to her again.

Almost burned to a ... wait for it... kris-b

It's a great story, and I am looking forward to next year's version, with all the embellishments that retelling can offer. A story like that should be nurtured with constant re-telling

Looks like a movie ... "Krisb, the hobbit, who almost burned the village during Bilbo's farewell party"

Just told the wife about your post....she is still laughing.

Also she then informed me to go weld up a good stand to hold the "Crackers" tonight......Thanks mate!!!!!sad.png

Thanks for sharing krisb, enjoy your barbie and make sure the esky is chok-a-blok with ice cold beer.

All the best for the New Year.

Cheers.

Reminds me of a New Years eve in a remote town in PNG which involved black powder, an old cannon, some coconuts and the only transformer in the town; which had until then been mounted on a power pole. Could not have hit it again if we tried!

Yes mate, Ive seen your community area, that looks a safe distance. The stand needs to be firmly planted in the ground, I cant stress the word "firmly" enough Weegee and make sure they are tied with rope to keep them "up-right". Those 6 inch mortars, like the 1 that started my fire, need to be firmly buried, repeat "firmly buried" in the ground well deep to allow for the back pressure and propulsion to take place, without this, altitude doesnt take effect. Keep any youngens way way back. Dont get complacent with them as they can ruin a good night quickly. Refer to the Hobbit video as posted by Thommo.

ps, least you got a nice clean area now for your stage!...Happy new year!smile.png

The biggest problem tomorrow will be finding the dogs again!!!!biggrin.png

Funniest OP I have read this year........

Made me laugh.

Happy new year mate.

Fireworks safety video.

If you cant plant it firmly in the ground, just stand it up in the middle of the street, but do try to make sure it is the right way up

lols, happy ne.BANG

You to mate, hope it was choice as brobiggrin.png

Hey Roadman, I beg to differ.......what Kiwi's do best is a hungie (not sure of spelling) but for the rest it is digging a hole in the ground filling it with heaps of food, then covering with hot coals and dirt, then waiting for hours on end, and what does one do while waiting????? drink of course.

So by the time the food is cooked, everyone is happy and the food really does taste great......that's what Kiwi's do best.

Have a good one my friend.
