Consumer Confidence Index peaks in December

The Nation

BANGKOK: -- Thailand's consumer confidence index (CCI) in December escalated to its highest in the last 15 months, according to the Thai Chamber of Commerce University.

Consumers have become more comfortable following an easing of domestic and global economic situation which has contributed to improved consumption, investment, export and tourism in the country, said Thanawat Polwichai, director of the university's Economic and Business Forecast Centre.

The December CCI was reported at 80.2, an increase from 79.1 while the confidence index on the overall economy was at 70.6, on job opportunities at 71.7 and on future income at 98.3.

However, the index below 100 displayed consumers' lack of confidence on the country's economic situation due to the unstable global economy, the European debt crisis and domestic political tension.

The Bt300 minimum wage increase was ranked top among people's anxiety given their concerns on possible unemployment which will be clearly seen in the middle of this year.

Thanawat said the government and private sector will have to urgently solve the problems resulting from the higher minimum wage nationwide.

The US injection of money into the market under the Quantitative Easing measure will stimulate the global economy while contribute to an increase of the fuel price to US$100 per barrel, the academic said, adding that the phenomenon will shoot up Thailand's retail fuel price by Bt2-3 per litre.

He predicted Thailand's economic growth at 5 per cent this year thanks to expanded exports but on the condition that internal political conflicts do not heat up and the US economy does not worsen.

A move by the Bank of Thailand's Monetary Policy Committee to set the inflation framework at 3.3-3.8 per cent is appropriate in accord with the country's economic situation, Thanawat said.

Stowaway snake clings to Qantas plane for 90-minute fight

Sydney - A 3-metre python slithered aboard a Qantas Airways passenger jet and clung to a wing flap for the 90-minute flight between Australia and Papua New Guinea despite freezing temperatures and 300-kilometre-per-hour headwinds.

"He was still hanging on for his dear life all the way until we landed in Port Moresby," passenger Robert Weber told national broadcaster ABC on Friday.

"When we landed the aircraft we couldn’t believe he was still moving. We saw it die. It took its last breath." Weber, a professional photographer, filmed Thursday’s drama aboard the twin-engined Bombardier Dash-8 turboprop on flight QF191 from Cairns to the Papua New Guinea capital.

Weber and the 43 others on board could do nothing as the back portion of the snake was hammered against the fuselage by the wind.

"It was very, very sad," Weber said. "I don’t think you’ll eversee this kind of thing again

PATTANI, Jan 11 -- Two soldiers were killed and two wounded in Pattani in bomb attack while they were heading to protect teachers and students at a school which was organising activities to mark National Children's Day on Saturday.

Pattani police and the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit rushed to the scene at 9am after receiving report that a military pickup truck was hit in a bombing on the Ban Buenae Kuebong-Ban Buenae Pinae Road in Yarang district.

At the scene, the officials found the Pattani Special Forces pickup was destroyed by the explosion. Two soldiers were killed at the scene while two others were wounded and sent to hospital in Yarang district.

The bomb caused a two by three metre hole in the road.

Police investigators said the soldiers were on their way to provide security protection at Ban Buenae Pinae School which was holding activities for Children's Day.

On the way to the school, the military patrol passed over a bomb built into a water pipe, with an electrical lead extending more than 100 metres into a rubber plantation to trigger the bomb. (MCOT online news)

BANGKOK, Jan 11 – Deputy Prime Minister Chalerm Yubamrung today expressed satisfaction with the result of his high-level talks with Malaysian cabinet members and senior officials on finding resolution to the longstanding troubles in Thailand’s far South.

He said his next move is to meet with Malaysia's former prime minister Mahathir bin Mohamad who is responsible for development of the Thai-Malaysian economic zone.

Indonesia is next on his Southeast Asian tour in an attempt to seek assistance from neighbouring Muslim countries in ending the decade-old crisis in southern Thailand particularly in Narathiwat, Yala, Pattani and certain Songkhla districts.

Mr Chalerm said he met with Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak, high-ranking cabinet members and security officials during his three-day trip to seek Kuala Lumpur’s cooperation in solving Thailand’s southern unrest.

He also met with operators of more than 6,500 Thai restaurants in 13 Malaysian states who have formed an association called the Tom Yum Kung Club to represent their concerns, and he listened to their grievances.

At least 150,000 Muslim Thais are working in the Tom Yum Kung restaurants without legal work permits. Kuala Lumpur promised to look into the plight of Thai workers and relax its regulations on the employment of migrants. (MCOT online news)

Agriculture Min unveils MOAC TV

BANGKOK, 11 January 2013 (NNT) – The Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives has introduced its broadcasting arm called “MOAC TV”, aiming to educate Thais regarding new agricultural technologies.

According to Agriculture Minister Yukol Limlamthong, the newly-launched MOAC TV will serve as a medium of contacts between the government and the agricultural sector. It will help increase Thailand’s agricultural competitiveness in the ASEAN region, as well as in the world market. It will also be the main channel to send out warning messages against natural threats of any kind, so that people will have enough time to brace for potential disasters.

He said that at present, 52% out of the approximately 20.5 million Thai households have access to cable and satellite TVs. He expected the percentage to rise to 98.6 by 2015 when the number of Thai households reaches approximately 25 million.

Mr Yukol reiterated that the opening of the MOAC TV provides an additional channel for viewers to access thorough agricultural information regarding national policies, problems and solutions, global economic situation, and natural changes in the world. This will help viewers to prepare and adjust themselves to the fast-changing situation in an efficient manner.
