Crime Jealous Husband Burns Wife Alive, Claims He Meant to Set Himself on Fire
Picture courtesy of SiamNews. A 58-year-old man from Chiang Rai has been arrested and charged following the brutal death of his wife, who suffered fatal burns after he doused her with petrol and set her alight. The incident, which has shocked the local community, took place late on the night of 27 June in the district of Thoeng. Police from Thoeng Provincial Station, acting on an arrest warrant issued by the Thoeng Provincial Court (Warrant No. 153/2568 dated 7 July 2025), apprehended Mr Chayakorn, a resident of Village 6, Nong Raet subdistrict. He was arrested at his home, the very scene of the crime, after evading authorities for over two weeks. According to the initial investigation, the crime stemmed from a heated argument between Mr Chayakorn and his wife, Ms Benjamas, reportedly over jealousy. During the altercation, Mr Chayakorn poured petrol over her and set it alight, causing severe injuries. The victim was rushed first to Thoeng Hospital, but due to the extent of her burns, she was transferred to Chiang Rai Prachanukroh Hospital. She succumbed to her injuries on 1 July. The case was brought to the attention of police by the victim’s father, while other family members ensured she received emergency medical care. After the attack, Mr Chayakorn fled, prompting an intensive manhunt. His return to the family home led to his arrest. During preliminary questioning, the suspect claimed he had intended to commit suicide by self-immolation but accidentally spilled the petrol on his wife. He admitted that the fire broke out after the fuel caught alight. However, the victim’s relatives have expressed deep scepticism about this version of events, pointing out that the burns were concentrated primarily on the victim’s body, suggesting a deliberate attack. Police are continuing their investigation and have taken Mr Chayakorn into custody for further questioning as they pursue charges in accordance with the law.
