The collapse of a small section in the Chiang Mai airport was only a minor incident

The director of Chiang Mai Airport has indicated that the international terminal did not collapse, and the incident at the airport involved only a section of the building that was under construction.

Chiang Mai Airport Director Suthara Huangsuwan (สุธารา ห่วงสุวรรณ) said the structure collapse at the international terminal was the fault of the contractor, when a crane lifted a 6 by 5 meters concrete plate up and placed it on the edge of the building. The outlying portion of the building, which was not connected to the main structure, could not take the weight and collapsed, injuring one worker.

The airport director said the international building will be completed within July, after which renovation of the surroundings at the airport will be made. The airport will then be able to accomodate 6.5 million passengers per year.

They blamed the contractors for Bangkok's new airport "upsets" and might get the hang of it when they build the next one :o

Well the crane driver must have been on something to go and bung a 6m x 5m chunk of concrete on the building and then think he's doing a good job :D:o

Parking is being worked on... Seems like they're building a proper parking building.

The new car park people are using now is suitable for people without any luggage. With a baggage trolley which most passengers have, you have to negotiate a very high curb to get to the top of the ramp down to the parking lot. This will probably be corrected once all pavements have been finished.

At the bottom of the ramp down to the parking lot, you arrive with trolley at the top of a high curb directly in front of parked cars, with no way to continue with your luggage, save for squeezing between

cars with your suitcases. Or maybe the parking lot is just to park in while you wait for arrivals/ departures & everyone is supposed to be picked up/dropped off outside the terminal doors - will get very congested.

I think what you see now is not the new car park but a temporary car park to be used until the new parking building is finished, the one that's being constructed where the old car park was.

Anyway.. how far do you typically have to walk from parking to terminal at almost any other airport in the world.... :o

If you need a trolly, get one and put it in your pickup, then go park. Or get a girlfriend/boyfriend.

On the positive side, parking for a whole day costs 1 Euro. :D At European airports you could park about 30 seconds for that. :D
