Phuket taxi driver rushes to his death

Phuket Gazette

PHUKET: -- A taxi driver speeding from JW Marriott Phuket Resort & Spa at Mai Khao Beach to pick up a passenger at the airport died after losing control of his car on Thepkrasattri Road early this afternoon.

Witnesses reported that Warongsak Rungsawang, 29, entered one of the sharp curves in Baan Mak Prok at high speed southbound, lost control and hit a power pole.

Capt Santi Prakobpran of the Tah Chat Chai Police was called to the scene at 12:45pm and found Mr Warongsak, bloodied and unconscious, pinned behind the steering wheel of the taxi he was driving, which was registered with the authorities as belonging to Sasiprapa Kitroongrot.

“Mai Khao and Kusoldharm rescue workers spent an hour cutting him out of the car, but he died before he could be freed,” Capt Santi said.

Mr Warongsak’s body was sent to Thalang Hospital.

What speed was he doing. Looking at the wreckage, it must be over 100 kph, or else the construction of the vehicle was so flimsy that it disintegrated.

Looking at pictures of crashed Pick-ups, same as the use as taxis in Pattaya, the vehicle retains its basic shape after an impact, even if the the engine bay is compressed. This shows a shattered mess.

RIP

That corner is max 60 km/h. Must admit though I like to drive that corner with 90 km/h with a pickup, very nice corner to drive to that speed. So with a sedan 100 km/h is fast but easily doable.

Well, another one bites the dust. It's not really surprising though, considering you get a license in just one day after passing the theoretical test and doing a few rounds on a parking lot.

Am I missing something, or are you assuming that he was an inexperienced driver? Why would you think so, he could have been driving for more than 10 years for all we know from the article.

From his age the reason for losing control of the car was probably not related to not having experience but due to a lot of bad habits, if not under the influence of something else, maybe over tired. I see a lot of this on the island, people that are chronically inpatient. It doesn't seem to compute that the different between what some would call reckless driving and normal driving is only a few minutes at the most, over the length of this island.

That said, it's always sad when someone looses their life in what seems to be a senseless, and avoidable, accident.

You are judging from his age?

It's somewhat telling to me some peoples mindset on this forum. If a motorcycle rider hits a power pole and dies, many people come on and slam them for not wearing a helmet. Like that would save you from a slamming into a concrete power pole at 80 or more KPH. Now they come and slam a guy who lost control of his car and died. Amazing Thai Visa posters. No empathy for anyone... Pretty disgusting bunch it seems these days.sick.gif
