I have this problem since almost a year and no car repair shop seems to be able to permanently fix it. I drive my Mitsubishi Pajero Sport only inside Bangkok, not on dirt roads or off-road. When I break slowly or softly, the brakes make a really annoying high squeeking sound. When I push down further or stop hard, there's barely any sound. I've been to several repair shops and have had the brake pads and even disks replaced, only to have the problem come back after 2 weeks of driving.

Does anyone know what the problem could be? The only answer I got from the repair shops is that my brakes are "dirty" and that they cleaned them, but it's not normal that I have to send the car to the repair shop every 2 weeks to have the brakes cleaned so they don't squeak, is it?

Squeaky brakes can sometimes be caused by a lack of copper grease on the brake pad 'ears' where they're seated in the caliper.

Have a good look and check if you can see if the pads have been fitted dry.

One thing I would try though which can work nicely is to take your car out and give some seriously hard braking. And I mean serious, high speed slam on so that the ABS kicks in. Find a safe place to do this if course.

Also if you can't determine whether the noise is coming from the front or back, drive with the handbrake on for a short distance.

In most cases the noise will disappear after my method but if not it will require a strip down, clean and high temperature greasing.

Hope that helps.

My PJS developed the same noise after about 12 months / 40,000 km. Mitsubishi said the brakes needed cleaning but the noise came back in a few days. In my case it is only a minor issue. The noise comes from the front brakes only when cold and braking gently. No noise after brakes used a few times / warm or braking harder.

I drive on some dirty roads as well as bitumen so dirt and dust may be a factor but mattk1 is probably right, the noise is most likely from the pad ears vibrating against the caliper. When the pads are changed I will check on the grease.

I think you should take your car to somewhere like B-Quick where they do brake work. In theory they should know how to charge you for some labour and a bottle or tube of "Disc brake grease" or "Disc Brake Quiet"

If you know where a decent car parts shop is you could by your own "Disc Brake Quiet" and take it with you to B-Quick.

Surf for "Disk brake anti squeal" and ignore all the gram geek bicycle stuff.

I don't know your brake setup but many pads have anti ''squeel'' shims supplied with new pads but many fitters chuck them away, just a thought.

That's about the KM's our PJS had travelled when it went in for new brake pads... It regularly did some somewhat spirited mountain driving and had it's fair share of hard, high-speed stops though ;)

sometimes the shims have a thin coating of teflon or aftermarket adhesive-backed

teflon shims can be purchased. supposedly the squeal is caused by vibration.
