Jet-ski anti-scam committee approves stronger mandatory-insurance system

PATTAYA:--The committee tasked with resolving Pattaya’s long-running jet ski scandal has approved a revised insurance scam that would force watercraft vendors to carry policies covering a minimum 50,000 baht for damage, death and total disability.

The panel, comprised of city and provincial government and police officials, voted unanimously Jan. 5 to approve the new insurance requirements, which they hope will remove the incentive for jet ski vendors to extort tourists for hundreds of thousands of baht in alleged damage. The proposal still must be approved by Chonburi’s governor.

“All jet skis must be insured to prevent accidents and situations which that lead to losses,” said Deputy Mayor Ronakit Ekasingh, the committee chairman.

".... carry policies covering a minimum 50,000 baht ...... extort tourists for hundreds of thousands of baht in alleged damage."

So a 50K insurance policy is going to prevent the extortion of 100s of thousands? Something wrong with the sums here.

Any insurance that doesnt cover at least 10Million Baht with zero excess would be completely pointless.

Better still: just ban the stupid things.

What is the point in having insurance. The jet-ski's are never actually damaged anyway.

Good point, so if the insurance claim process is serious and professional, very few claims will be paid.

If there are many claims the insurance company will either dispute more and more claims / demand more proof of new dameage, or simply increase the premiums.

Is this the answer?

Does the insurance cover you if the vendor attacks a renter? Now they are revising an insurance scam? Still the same BS, they will demand 80,000, minus the 50,000, so that leaves you will just a little payment of 30,000. Wow, this gets better every day!

The jet ski mafias main objective is to get as much money as possible off every person who rents a jet ski just making them take out insurance will not solve the problem.

They need to have cameras recording there every move and law enforcement that will actually put an operator behind bars for extortion.

The police have been the biggest part of problem for a long time .

The point is that if there is insurance then there is no longer any way of extorting money from the renter for "damage". The renter just tells the owner to claim on the insurance.

But the cover would have to be large enough, and with zero excess.

Insurance won't stop this because the damage is not caused by the renter in the first place.

The renter will also be a foreign national who won't know about mandatory insurance.

It's bloody stoopid.

Feb. 28 Due Date for Jet Ski’s Insurance

On Wednesday afternoon at Pattaya City Hall, Deputy Mayor Ronagit Ekasing met with Jet Ski Owners and the representatives from the Jet Ski Club to inform them of the next regulatory step for Jet Ski operators: purchasing insurance. Compensation matters have been on the table from the beginning, between the officials and Jet Ski Club, as they both sought to create standard procedures and fees to help both the Jet Ski operators and the tourists; however, no solution has has been arrived at.
