Hi, and thanks in advance! I need an education on how to make absolutely certain I have an ADSL fixed line in my residence before I rent it.

Here's the situation. I had a condo, a fixed line from TOT and ADSL from True (lies) corporation. The speed and stability was good. Owner sells condo, and I'm out.

I then take an apartment in Bang Yai based the apartment owners promise that I can get ADSL. I did not know that phone lines were limited and without a "fixed line" from True or TOT, I would not get ADSL. My apartment buildings phone lines are all taken. I have to move again.

When I move to a house or a townhouse I would like to understand that if I can get a phone line from either TOT or True, that I can 100% get ADSL from True, not wifi, ADSL.

3 Months without high speed internet has cost me a small fortune and I do not want a repeat of this experience!

Again, thank you in advance!

In normal countries Internet Provides can still provide ADSL even if you have no phone line with the telco - it's called dry loop. They won't be able to do it if, however, your place is far from the termination in the telco office. In general - the further you are from the cities, the smaller the chances you will get ADSL. usually, to get some sort of DSL you should be within 5km of the termination - http://www.dslreports.com/faq/4676

I guess you should call them and provide the address, and they will be able to tell you if ADSL would be available:

That is great advice. Or go to the office; it might be easier to have a better dialog, fully understand what they mean.

I had ADSL for a year when my neighbor moved in across the street into his recently completed house. At that time TOT was the only provider so we went to the TOT office to sign him up. NO CAN DO. Turned out that the pipelines were saturated and could not handle more users. They were adding more servers and other hardware to service the area and would be able to hook him up in 2 or 3 months. That happened.

If we had not gone in, he might have just gotten a NO answer on the phone from a less informed customer service rep.

Late last year I went by the TOT office to see if they had a similar program option to True's new fiber optics that was just installed in our moo baan. They said they had this and that but wait a minute and let them check my physical address and line. Turned out that they could not give me more than 7MB down. The old ADSL line in the moo baan just could not compete with new fiber optics. They did not try to ignore the issue. I am not sure what answer I might have gotten on the phone but because I was there talking to them face to face they checked.

I always recommend to anyone that asks that they go into the office and be very specific about the address and what is it they will want and when before moving to a new home/condo. And to ask what kind of paper work will be needed from whom, e.g., what would be required to have the service in your name.

With TRUE, you can see where their Ultra high speed product (DOCSIS) is available here http://onlinetv.true...e/index_en.html. It's likely out of date though.

There used to be a page where you could do an online search by either location or phone number to see whether ADSL/DOCSIS was available. However that page seems to have disappeared, or at least I can't find it. TRUE's website seems to me to be a lot less user friendly than it used to be.

I think the best way is to get the TRUE landline number of either the apartment or a next door neighbour and with that, TRUE can tell you definitively what the local exchange (or DSLAM) is capable of. They have an online chat service with English speaking operators here http://support.truec...viceNo==

If you think TRUE's online help is not very helpful, that's because you haven't tried TOT yet.

The True office here in Hua Hin has access to a Google Earth-type map showing satellite images of streets and bulidings indicating where their DOCSIS cables go, and don't go. When I signed up, they showed me my townhouse on their screen with and indicator (green check mark maybe?) that DOCSIS (cable) internet was available.

Not sure if all areas are mapped that way, but might be worth a trip to the local True shop to see.
