Ex-minister Sompat found dead in Chiang Mai hotel, 'no foul play'

The Nation

CHIANG MAI: -- Sompat Kaewpichit, a former Chart Thai MP for Nakhon Pathom and former deputy agriculture and cooperatives minister in the Samak Sundaravej government, was found dead in a room in a Chiang Mai hotel on Saturday night, reports said.

The body of Sompat, 52, was found lying face down in the bathroom of a suite on the 10th floor, wearing a long-sleeved sweater and a pair of jeans.

Pol Lt Col Burachat Kwankam, an investigator from Pupingratchan station, said there were no traces of physical assault or foul play and an initial physical examination found that Sompat suffered from coronary artery disease. His family had no suspicions about his death.

Sompat's bag was packed and medicine for the treatment of gastro-esophageal reflux disease were found on the table.

Police said Sompat was leading 400 officials from the Nakhon Pathom Provincial Administrative Organisation and the Tambon Nakhon Pathom Administrative Organisation on an excursion to Chiang Mai and checked into the hotel on Thursday morning.

The group had left Chiang Mai on Saturday and Sompat was expected to follow in his personal vehicle later in the morning.

After check-out time, a housekeeper knocked on Sompat's door but received no answer. She decided to open the room with a spare key on Saturday at 10pm and found Sompat lying dead by the toilet.

Police said they suspected Sompat could not help himself after falling ill while being left alone. His body will be submitted for autopsy at Maharat Nakhon Chiang Mai Hospital to officially determine the cause of death.

Sompat was elected an MP for Nakhon Pathom under the Chart Thai Party banner for the first time in 1995. In 2008, he was appointed deputy agriculture and cooperatives minister in the Samak government.

After the Samak government was disqualified by the Constitution Court, Sompat was allowed to continue in his post in the Somchai Wongsawat government until he was deprived of his political rights for five years.
