Witness' For Thai Marriage And English Translator

Featured Replies

Today I went with my fiance to thong lor government office in hopes of getting married. They said that we needed two friends and someone other then my fiance to translate for us.

Are there any offices that do not have these requirements? We want to get married before March 1st to meet prior travel plans.

Hher friends live pretty far away and probably will not make it on such short notice and I dont have any friends in Thailand.

Try Bang Ruk in the Patpong area as they do the most. Normally you just give lunch money to a couple of people in the office to act as witness and translator can be anyone who understands both Thai and English.

How can this be? got married iat laski near the ministry building in Jan and had no witnesses, BTW you only need minimal thai to understand the questions as it's just the ones on the freedom to marry form, name age address etc, it's a bit of a farce. Give them 100 baht for the 'translation'

Whoooaaa, wait a minute! This is the first I have heard about getting witnesses and answering questions in Thai. Can somebody please confirm that this is not the case? Kop khun kap :o

We didn't need any of that when we did the deed.

We registered ours at the Phra Nakhon District Registration Office in the Bangkok Province. The (acting) registrar spoke good English and it was over in a flash.

We used a translation service to expedite the process and everything was done and dusted the same day, if you have the cash that's the way to go IMHO.

PM me for details of translation service if you want, your gonna need one anyway.

The requirement is two witness and a translator but it is up to the District Office how that is applied. Some, like Bang Ruk are fluent enough in English that I do not believe they require the translator (who is there to insure you understand what you are signing - it is a legal document and is best that you are not signing a paper that says you give all your worldly possessions for life to so and so). The witness part is a requirement. Some offices or services will take care of that for you, others will ask if you want a staffer to sign (but with current policy they probably just say you need and it would be up to you to do the asking). It is not a big deal but something to be aware of.

When you have the translated papers of your Embassy legalised by Foreign Affairs you go to Bang Rak with only ONE Thai whitness/interpreter which can be a friend or her relative (adult) you will be married within one hour. They marry approxemately 20 Farangs a day and are giving their services with a laugh and involvement. All support, very nice officials for only Baht 450 which is I think for the album they give to store the official documents. Highly recommended!
