Abhisit tells Hun Sen not to link disputes

BANGKOK: -- Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen appears to be confused about issues related to land and maritime border disputes with Thailand, Democrat Party leader Abhisit Vejjajiva said yesterday.

He denied having tried to politicise these issues, as alleged by Hun Sen, saying he had merely reacted to remarks by government leaders and to those of former PM Thaksin Shinawatra.

"Hun Sen seems to have got the timeline of these issues mixed up and I want to clarify," Abhisit said.

In regard to the exploration for oil and gas in the Thai-Cambodian overlapping maritime claims area, Thaksin himself had expressed interest in investing in the project, he said.

Abhisit said he had not smeared Thaksin or Hun Sen by fabricating business linkages between the two.

Furthermore, statements from the Cambodian government admitted ongoing negotiations with the Yingluck government in regard to border issues governed by two memoranda of understanding (MoUs).

The negotiations implied a link between land and maritime border disputes, he said.

Last week Foreign Minister Surapong Towichukchaikul said he did not want to reveal details of negotiations on the border dispute near the Preah Vihear Temple because it would affect the overlapping maritime boundary talks, Abhisit said.

He added that in contrast to the government's stand, he would not link the two MoUs on land and maritime disputes because it would put Thailand at a disadvantage. He said the government was obliged to make a decision soon on whether to uphold the MoU on the maritime boundary or to convince Cambodia to switch to a new framework.

The geographical fact is the majority of maritime resources are located on the Thai side - but the profit sharing formula calls for a 50-50 split, he said.

Surapong yesterday distributed an unofficial translation in Phnom Penh of a statement from the Cambodian government.

The Cambodian government issued the statement in response to the Democrat Party's accusation that it has secret interests with Thaksin in the overlapping maritime areas. Surapong said Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra would tomorrow discuss the Preah Vihear case with all relevant officials and the Cabinet would, by the middle of March, resolve the direction in which the case would be fought in the International Court of Justice.

Bravo, Khun Abhisit!!!!

Bravo, Khun Abhisit!!!!

I haven't looked at these disputes closely enough to decide one way or the other although I do sense that Abhisit is being a little nationalistic over the temple but surely he's getting this all wrong. He seems to be giving a statement that on the face of it seems to be measured, knowledgeable and worthy of further scrutiny. Shouldn't the correct response in the current political climate be ' I don't know anything about that'. 'I haven't be told about that'. 'I will set up 5 committees to report back next year so I can pass it on to somebody else who will make a decision'.

LOL, poor Hun Sen is getting all hot under the collar because Abihist is hilighting his dirty deals with the criminal Thaksin. The PTP is collapsing under the weight of compliance with Thaksins untouchable machinations, the rice scheme, the Cambodian deal and the deep sea port at Dawei, to mention a few.

Fifteen all.

"Thaksin himself had expressed interest in investing in the project,"

So, the on the lam, convicted and sentenced, 'Love's Thailand and Thai people guy', right ?

Because Abhisit speaks so polite and well educated English and pretends to look like the ideal son-in-law; don't forget he is an enormous crook too. Like all. Between X-mas and NY 2009 he allowed 4.715 Lao H'mong refugees in camps in Thailand to be forcefully deported back to Laos. Most of the refugees were recognized refugees by the UNHCR. No wonder Thailand dropped shamefully down on the Human Rights list of countries.

Why between X-mas and NY? Because all Western diplomatic missions were closed and ambassadors / diplomats away..... A coward 1st class.

Why obeying the communistic Lao Government? Because he made trouble with Hun Sen already and didn't want an additional neighbour upset. Where are

all Lao H'mong now (the older generation which fought side by side with the U.S. against Communism....)?

When I see or hear the man, I know why I support the Shinawatra family strongly and good he has been stripped of his military rank!

So perhaps you might explain how he personally made illicit money, from this off-topic mass-deportation of refugees, or how wanting to appease Hun Sen (Thaksin's old 'eternal friend') makes Abhisit abhorrent, but doesn't have a similar effect on Thaksin ? No Double Standards, please !

Also, .'Espinete', your logic seems somewhat strange, you say because you don't like abhisit this is a good reason to love the paymaster.

Not what I would call adult logic.

Well let us look at this......it would appear some agreement needs to be reached on both boundaries, so it is wise for Yingluck to speak with the Cambodian authorites to smooth the way for an amicable agreement. The oil and gas must be brought to the surface, it will cost money, there will probably need to be private investment, Abhisit and his cronies are as capable as Thaksin with regard to investment if he wishes. So just more inuendo from Abhisit, guess what guys whoever brings up the oil and gas will want a profit, but I guess as long as it is not your rival making big bucks that is ok!!
