Your Adsl Bandwith In Thailand - Let's Draw A Map!

Ji-net offers this interesting feature to test your ADSL bandwith :

http://www.ji-net.com/bwtest

I enclose the result from my living place (Italy).

Surely it's not perfect at all, but it can be useful to draw a quite-good painting of the ADSL bandwith available in the Land of Smiles (and ASIA).

A sample post could be :

Thailand - Bangkok - Sukhumvit Soi 4 - 26-2-2006 13.10 : 231.50 Kbps

(TT&T phone line + CAT ADSL 2Mbit : 1000 baht/month - without up-download limits)

Tested features (satisfaction from 1 to 10) : Voip (www.voipstunt.com), eMule : 8 (your rating)

Browser : Opera + Ji-net browser accelerator

Positive feedback : easy to set-up, prepaid cards available everywhere, etc..

Negative feedback : low bandwith from 9pm to 12pm, online customer service always unavailable, etc..

If used:

WLAN : public into Starbuck in Patong (150 baht/hour) + wifi laptop (easy to set-up).

Please Phuket residents post your experience!

These numbers seem to be low as I've just downloaded a file at 115KB/sec as is my usual download speed with fast sites.

Just ran the bandwidth test and got thefollowing results:

506.60 Kbps

which means you can download at 46.05 KByte / Sec. from our servers.

I have no complaint about the bandwidth and even try to reduce it at times as I often am trying to retrieve a large amount of data and don't want to be a bandwidth hog so I am content to wait. My only complaint is that it appears that Ji-net reduces my speed even further and often denies DNS service for anywhere from 15 minutes to several hours of I exceed some unknown data in/out amount. I have been trying to determine the best time to send/receive large amounts of data with little impact on others and what a reasonable speed might be that would eliminate service stoppage. I've tried keeping my receive speed to 48kbps (6KB/s) and my send speed to 16kbps (2KB/s) and even then I was denied service for a couple of hours. I know some smaller ISP's in the U.S. have what they call a Fair Use Policy, but have been unable to determine what Ji-net uses. Has anyone else encountered this and if so any infoas to how to avoid service3 stopages, short of not using the internet?

I guess I've got TOT ADSL 512/256, for which I pay 700 baht per month in Hua Hin. My results:182.70 Kbps

which means you can download at 16.61 KByte / Sec. from our servers.

But it's 2 a.m. in Thailand. This afternoon, I gave up and went into town and got better service at the internet shop for 20 baht per hour. I mean, nothing worked at my place this afternoon.

Thailand - Bangkok - Petchakasem 79 - 27-2-2006 3.30pm : 1500 Kbps

True phone line & True Broadband 2mb+ B1200 per month - no upload or download limits

Browser : Firefox

Positive feedback : Engineeer came the same day I ordered, no problems so far

Negative feedback : None

Overall I'm very happoy with my setup, I must be the only person in the area using this service at home as I can download incredibly quickly and have never suffered any 'bottle-neck' problems, it is even faster than more reliable than when I lived in the UK using NTL 1.5mb!

I really wonder about the accuracy of the few different tests I've tried as there are files I ve just tried downloading again and still got 115KB/sec when the tests still mention 70(or so) KB/sec.

Have you divided for 8? bits and Bytes are different. :o

If you have 603 kb(its)ps, you can download 75.4 KB(ytes)/sec.

Your concern seems to follow an opposite rule (less bandwith with an unexpected higher transfer speed). Can you explain it better (posting your test with Ji-net)?

Speed is not the only factor that determines how fast a website is shown on your screen. Latency, or the round-trip-time, is also a very important factor.

The image below is a 5-minute average of the latency between my aDSL line and a server in Europe (and it runs via The States)

tao-rt01-rtt-ext-day.png

red line is the longest time, green line is the fastest time. Usually it's around 450ms, sometimes it can go up to 1200ms. (Compare it to IPstar, round-trip-time to Europe can be up to 2000ms)

Good post Prasert!

Latency (or round-trip time)? :D

From Wikipedia :

The term latency can refer to multiple concepts:

- Latency (engineering), a time delay between the moment something is initiated, and the moment its first effect begins.

- RAM latency, the amount of time a computer needs to wait to get data from RAM.

Can you explain me better this term (related to thai ISP of course).

How can i test the latency from Thailand to Italy to evaluate (and solve) problems in advance.

I will need to link my laptop to my firm server in Italy.

I have to show to my boss (in my living country) that i can work offside (2 months) and i need a clear picture to choose the right ISP on Phuket.

GPRS and WLAN will be second choices.

I cannot work from a public place (calling customers, and sales requires concentration and silence).

I think to have found the right place where to stay in Rawai, they use Ji-net with a WLAN (the best solution in the island, they say :o ), i have asked them to make the Ji-net test and send me the results (3 days ago).

Still no result test answers, they are taking time (i think to obtain the best performance.... :D ).

They told me that electric brakes happen "sometimes" ( :D ) when rains a lot (and UPS are not so useful at all, in this case).

Not too many Phuket lovers (and residents) on Thaivisa.. :D

Is it possible to read this Internet map to evaluate the best ISP (Ji-net use 2 NIX, is it a good thing?)

What is a NIX?

Latency is quite simple: ping

When you open a command box on your computer, you can ping an ip address by:

ping 203.107.136.7 (as an example!)

The output shows the time it takes for a data packet to travel over the internet to that IP address and back to you: round-trip-time or latency

On fast networks, that time is usually below 15 mili-seconds.

Thailand is littlebit different story, since all international web-traffic is going through a transparant proxy. This will cause an extra delay.

So the speedtest in this topic will only show you the speed you can get here in Asia. You will not get that speed when you're downloading from the US, eg. windowsupdate.

You can experience the latency with VoIP: use Skype on an IPstar satellite connection. The receiving party should turn off echo-cancellation, and when you speak into your microphone you will hear back your voice faintly some 3 seconds later.

Now try to do the same over an aDSL connection. You will hardly notice the delay.

Not only voice traffic, but also data traffic experiences this. Every packet your computer received must be acknowledged to the sending server. When the latency is hughe, your line can be 8Mbps download, but it will still give you the feeling it's dead slow.

To be more specific on the connection to Italy:

ping your company's gateway. If the times shown are below 500ms, you will be able to setup a VPN connection to your company's network.

If the delay is more than 1500ms, you're probably using an IPstar satellite connection or TOT is working on the phone lines. A VPN connection is likely not to work....

I don't know why you would want to test the download speed of Thai people using Thai ISPs to a Thai server. It's basically all one and the same... you'll get maximum speed, as long as your line is working properly, with few exceptions. You could just as easily state the speed you subscribed to, and your test speed would be approximately the same.

The problem with Thai broadband is not with speed to servers within Thailand, it's speed to servers outside of Thailand.

Now, your speed, since you are in Italy, might be of a little relevance, but the majority of people here are expats living in Thailand (with the nightmare of Thai broadband). Even so, the bottleneck with Thailand is not the upload (which is what you're testing, Thailand's output, your download), since Thailand doesn't have much outgoing traffic. It's with the incoming traffic to Thailand.

For a good, relevant speed test post, I suggest going to place like speakeasy and mcafee, to test speeds to the US, and then going to similar sites in Europe, and posting those results instead.

Well posted (it's a new matter i'm building my bones with your help, thanks guys :D ).

Unfortunately i cannot make tests directly from Los, i need to ask to the room/apartment owner in advance.

I've found the right place (i think) near Patong, it has :

TT&T phone line + JI-net ADSL (no limits) 256 K and the test results have been :

Ji-net.com/bwtest = 190 kbps :D

Speakeast.net/speedtest = 174 :D

Both test yesterday 1-3-2006 at 4 pm

(i need to work from 2pm to 10pm from monday to friday in july-august).

The test has been done from the apartment owner.

How can i ask him to do the ping test? :o

He doesn't seem an expert (like me) so what do you suggest me?

Does it exist an online test where he simply writes the gateway numbers to do the ping test? :D

Can i ask to Ji-net customer service to do the tests if i provide them the telephone number (thai ADSL) and my italian firm gateway?

I need the VPN only to read emails from my firm-email server.... (lotus notes)

Another thing, Ji-net offers to download an ADSL accelerator software or to use its proxy, are them useful features?

yes. open a command window and type ping xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx

of course fill in the correct ip address!

the phonenumber has nothing to do with the dsl connection.

post the gateway ip, and we will all ping it.

http://www.ji-net.com/link/link.asp?id=294

the proxy is only for normal webtraffic. it will not be usefull for vpn connections.

DL-accelerators just open more connections to a server for the same file, thus using the available bandwidth more effective.

but it will not make your connection faster.

Any online test available?

If two houses in Phuket (far 5 km) use the same phone line (TT&T) and the same ISP (Ji-net), why the Ji-net test results are so different ?

1st place (resort) in Rawai : ADSL 512/256 : ji-net.com/bwtest = 421.80 kbps with WLAN for more users

2nd place (private house) in Karon : ADSL 256 ji-net.com/bwtest = 190 kbps , and speakeast.net/speedtest = 174 kbps, both test at 4 pm

Which is the best one?

The second place?

Bolognamare,

Both locations perform as expected and in a similar manner. They both deliver between 70% and 80% of their topspeed, which for adsl in Thailand is good!

In the resort their theoretical topspeed is 512kbps, probably to support more users simultaniously.

In the house the topspeed is 256kbps...

If several users are using the internet in the resort, but they are only surfing the web, you'll hardly see a drop in speed, since surfing uses only very little bandwidth! Speed would slow down if some users are downloading big files etc...Most public hotspots (wlan) block a lot of stuff to prevent misuse of their internet. P2P probably is blocked, smtp will be blocked to prevent spammers using the mailserver of the hotspot, ftp will be blocked,etc...

Also of importance to you is what exact package is used. For example TT&T (using the Maxnet name) has the home package, life packege, SME package etc.

The home 512/256 package will be slower (and much cheaper) then the 512/256 SME package, especially during peak hours, since the ISP will share the home-line very heavy. (they do need to make a profit!)

All ISP's have the same system of providing several levels of service in the same speed range!

I have internet in several locations in the Pattaya area, all on the Maxnet4life package (which is 1 step up from the home package, but more then 3 times as expensive!)

The 256/128 packages give me between 170 and 210kbps, depending on time of the day, while where I have 512/256, I can expect between 350 and 430kbps.

The upload speeds are more stable and close to advertised, since not that many people are uploading!

I Have VDSL line here in Phuket, I got 240kbps - but I pay 3,500 Baht a month. Still its always that level of service, is a copper run to my door (no phone line needed) and the service level is very good (installed within two-ddays of making teh call).
