Ok let's start a betting pool, and see how deep your knowledge of Thai politics is. Who thinks he will be locked in a prison

and do some serious time, and who thinks he will be in prison for a couple weeks as a show, and then quietly let out while the

story is killed?? May be hard to track this story, as one of the certainties of life here is that this story will go away.....

I'll go with a couple of weeks.

"A corrections officer said yesterday morning that Somchai was conscious and able to talk. He ate boiled rice and an omelette for breakfast. Somchai had requested special meals and refused to accept the food provided by the Corrections Department, the officer said."

Rice and fish heads for this creep.bah.gif

Sorry Somchai we're clean out of lobsters and pate de fois gras.

I live in the area that he was living with his family members ( I teach his grandson ). Yes he has been a naughty man, but what he and his family have done for this province is excellent. Much better than the Government has or will ever do.Sorry if i'm bias but I live in a nice clean safe family friendly part of Thailand and what I gather by the local people (policemen, teachers, buisness owners ) It's down to his family.

A naughty man! Hmm. Much the same was said about the Kray twins, they was loverly boys, loved their dear old mum, helped old ladies across the road etc etc.

And they did wonders for the local folk in the east end of London which was/ is poor in comparison to the rest of London. I used to work with an old barrowboy from London here in Thailand and he always said the Krays were gents ( until you pissed them off or tried to take thier buisness ) We have naughty people all around the world.

Of course the people in the East End of London said they were 'gents'. They were terrified of them.

What has he done for Chonburi except "taxing" every business in the province?

The reason Chonburi (and Rayong) has developed is the same reason that Pathum Thani, Ayuthaya, Chachoengsao, Nonthaburi, Samut Sakorn, Samut Prakan, etc have developed. i.e. that they are sufficiently near to Bangkok during a 30-year period when Thailand underwent massive industrialisation.

Chonburi (and Rayong) have the massive advantage of having deep sea ports. This attracts even more of the export-driven industry. Every building supply contract has to go through his family increasing costs for all businesses.

The only positive thing you can say is that by having a strongman who no-one dares to go up against, it provides some stability as Saddam Hussein did in Iraq.

Do not forget he has been convicted both of murder of a senior local politician and an unrelated corruption case. And then simply ignored the conviction for years.

Is this really the governance Thailand wants for the future?

So, while taking bribes and rigging contracts, and killing a few people, he did a bit of good. That still doesn't exempt him from following the law. Same for any and all of family and friends or anyone else who sheltered him while he was wanted by authorities - for 7 years.

Some of the biggest coke dealers in Colombia also fund teenage soccer teams - should we then excuse them of their crimes because they do a bit of good on the side?

I think he will get bail then moved to an inactive post

The area where he lived is much better developed than all other cities around here. I don't think this is because it's close to BKK - other areas even closer to BKK are much less developed. I am talking about clean, safe road, nice pavements, nice decorations, good public infrastructure. Somehow this mafia man managed to do better work than any government.

Everyone was and is either scared or him or respects him. I am sure his prison time (if there will be any) will not be very unpleasant.

In Thailand mafia brings order and structure, no matter which mafia it is: police, government or other.

A respirator is used for for forced breathing, with a tube inserted into your throat, for when you are unable to breathe on your own. Such as being in a coma.

I sincerely doubt that was the case here, since he seemed quite healthy when first arrested.

To finalize your post, it's absolutely guaranteed he's NOT on a respirator (which is, actually, properly called a ventilator).

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ventilator

The inch-wide tube used is run through your vocal cords, which would prevent,

OP said, "Somchai was... able to talk"

It would also prevent,

OP said, "He ate boiled rice and an omelette for breakfast."

Either the prison is misusing the term respirator or The Nation is.

Take your pick.

Most likely, he's just on an oxygen mask or an oxygen nasal cannula.

The mafia brings pain and suffering to the average person. They create nothing, but only exist as a leech upon the backs

of ordinary people. Simply ask any Thai person what they think of the largest mafia, the Thai police.......

Did he divert money to build infrastructure within his area? Probably. Does that change anything? Do you really want to exchange rule of law for mafia dons telling you what to do? That would put us back in the middle ages, no thanks.

No, I don't want that. But I am still amazed too see how a criminal could develop an area much better than any Thai government can. The place where he lived can act as a role model for the rest of Thailand. He was into large scale corruption, the average person actually benefited from his actions - the whole area progressed. I won't call him a Robin Hood. He is a very serious criminal and I am happy he got caught. But, could it be the governments were even more corrupt than this criminal? (this is an honest question, not a rhetorical question).

While I don't know this minister, it's outrageous when an influential politician is above the law.

Who is he to publicly announce that in this instance the law won't be upheld?!?

The guy needs to get indicted and then fired without pension entitlement!

The law doesn't matter - next, he might say "the state? That would be me"?!

^^^^^^^

Good luck to those who require special meals in prison!

Officer, I need halal / vegetarian / lacto ovo... And I doubt they would get

sent to hospital when there isn't some dramatic and verifiable illness.

Seems some people continue to be more equal than others, huh?

Is this guy among 100+ in one large room? Just wondering

It's all about money. If he wields influential with the people who dole out taxpayer money, than ok, but that doesn't impress me. It's still likely that 70% went in to his pocket, and the rest might get put in to a road or some street lamps. Money going to his district is money which isn't going to other peoples' districts. Thaksin (one of his buddies, no doubt) openly declared while PM, that districts which vote strongly for HIM get the lion's share of public money handouts. No matter how spiffed up Poh's neighborhood appears, it doesn't erase his many years of illegal activity, including murdering political rivals.

Do you really think HE spent ANY of HIS money on the area? All he did was spend a SMALL amount of the corruption money he received from the businesses in the area. It was the businesses that paid, and only a small portion of what they paid went to the local development.

Sorry Somchai we're clean out of lobsters and pate de fois gras.

Clearly what is needed is for Chuwit to make another magnanimous, and very humorous, personal delivery of special food for the convict the same as he did earlier...

A proud tradition of visiting prisoners was exemplified by Chart Thai Party Deputy Leader Chuwit visiting the Election Commissioners and benevolently bringing them fried rice and iced coffee in July 2006 after they were convicted of malfeasance in office and incarcerated in prison when their bail was refused.

How about a bowl of maggots?

Maggots are a delicacy here.

I know this area quite well and I'm wondering why your saying he did marvellous development work for the area.

Sorry but I just dont see it, Chonburi city itself is lacking in roadworks, hospitals, schools etc., and nobody could ever claim it to be clean.

Perhaps you could share some examples of the developments you claim.
