Hi, i live at Ao Namao (close to Ao Nang–Krabi ) there isn’t TOT or 3BB ADSL line on the area to connect my computer to Internet at home. Which is the more reliable and the best solution to get Internet fast as possible, Air card, 3G, with True Move or CAT Telecom ? Could you advice me please ? Thanks a lot ! smile.png

To the best of my knowledge 3G has not been implemented in Thailand as yet except for a few test areas in BKK despite what all the carriers are saying.

An Aircard will work on the standard 2G and enhanced 2G which can be slow to somewhat fast depending on the location of the nearest towers, time of the day, and number of other users. I would visit the nearest TOT/BBB/CAT office to discuss the options available to include installing a small antenna on the side of the house which will pull in a stronger signal than a standard Air Card.

The last option would be to sign up for IP Star which is a satellite based net service.

You can research the issue on the forum to get more background info as well.

I live reasonably nearby and just had CAT installed after a good experience with them elsewhere. My previous experience was that they installed and I never spoke to them again for 18 months till I moved out, because nothing ever went wrong.

i did try to compare 3BB, True, TOT but all of them started on with the standard 'cannot, impossible it's too far', then 'maybe can but you must pay, we will come and check soon' lines, which for me sets a precedent for service. Spoke to CAT, they came out the next day to survey and it was installed and running properly within 4 days including a new cable to the house, cabling was 6k baht based on distance, I'm the first in the area with it.

I'm paying for 20mb and getting it consistently both to Thai servers (18ms ping) and to London with (300ms ping)

Interestingly I installed my own router today as I have higher end one, since I did I've been getting 28mb Thailand / 25mb UK. I wonder if there was some kind of limiter in place on the modem provided. My router is 5ghz and a faster wireless protocol but I thought either of these would supply the same speed except for local network communication.

Anyway, to summarise, with the router they supplied (1500 baht mid range linksys one) I got exactly the speed offered, and with a better router I'm actually getting 150% of it.

For anything beyond emails and general web browsing I wouldn't recommend anything other than a fixed line. To be fair I have been burnt before with Aircards etc so perhaps they have improved over the last couple of years, but I can certainly recommend CAT for delivering advertised speeds, no hassle surveying and speedy installation. It probably costs twice the price of the others but I think (especially if stability is important) it's well worth the money.

Sorry, but True Move H has a very extensive and reliable network for 3G+ nationwide. See http://truemoveh.truecorp.co.th/coverage?ln=en

To the OP, True Move H has been excellent for me around Ao Luek and also Ao Nang and Krabi town when I have visiting there. Reliable service and great speed. If you were to use an aircard on their network you would be fairly assured of good internet. Fixed line is always better but if you can't get a connection, I would recommend True Move H on an aircard.

Agreed

Fixed is best bang for buck. Stay away from CDMA cause is on the way out.

True 3G now has more cell stations than its old 2G ( and 850mhz goes further than 1800 MHz too ) and as such has basically nationwide coverage already.

I have no idea where you're getting your info but if you do a little serious research you'll see that 3G was only recently approved by the govt for use in Thailand. What you are seeing is enhanced 2G although it says 3G when you look at your computer.

Sorry Mike, you need to do your research............

it started with UMTS 2 years back, and then changed to HSPA+one year back - both are 3G......... unless your claiming that the 3G in Europe is actually 2G

Great, thanks to thes informations, there's an True Move antenna 200 meters to my house so i'll choose it...

Is it big, red and white? If so it's in fact a CAT tower - True connects to their infrastructure and if it's 200m away a fixed CAT line is no problem for you.
