New contractor will be hired to finish construction of police stations

BANGKOK, 15 February 2013 (NNT)- In an effort to find solutions to the police station construction scandal, the Royal Thai Police has invited police chiefs from 396 stations to attend a meeting to exchange ideas on the issue.

According to National Pol Chief Gen Adul Sangsingkaew, over 650 police commanders of various branches have been made aware of the Office's current problems with PCC Development and Construction Co Ltd., the construction company that was awarded the contract but failed to finish the constructions of the 396 police stations across Thailand.

All the police commanders have reportedly been told to make the most of their stations while the problems are being solved. The stations should be kept clean, in good condition, and able to provide services to all the people.

300,000 baht will be given to each of the stations that has been demolished; stations abandoned by construction sub-contractors will be given 100,000 baht each.

The National Police Chief added later that the contract with PCC Development and Construction will be terminated and new contractors will be hired as soon as possible. Meanwhile, the damage that occurred as a result of the the scandal is still being assessed at present.

THAI-MYANMAR RELATIONS

Thailand starts issuing travel documents cards to Myanmar migrants

BANGKOK: -- Thailand opened 11 one-stop service centres nationwide on Friday to speed up the registration of an estimated 1 million undocumented Myanmar migrant workers in the country.

The offices, manned by both Thai and Myanmar immigration officers, are to verify the nationalities of undocumented migrant workers in the country and eventually issue them with temporary traveldocuments, work permits and visas.

Thailand initially set a December 14 deadline for all Myanmar,Cambodian and Lao migrants to register and obtain properdocumentation for working legally.

Although 1.3 million Myanmar nationals met the registration deadline, more than 1 million failed to do so, said Tin Win, Myanmar’s ambassador to Thailand.

The Thai cabinet agreed to extend the deadline to March 16, and to help the process by setting up one-stop registration centres in 11 provinces nationwide.

Since the centres can process only about 1,000 migrants daily, Myanmar authorities have asked Thailand to extend the registration deadline to a more realistic date, Myanmar Deputy Labour Minister Myint Thein said after visiting Thailand last week.

SRT invests 234 mill baht to revamp JJ market

BANGKOK, 15 February 2013 (NNT) – The State Railway of Thailand (SRT) has announced a 234-million-baht plan to revamp Chatuchak (JJ) weekend market, with construction set to begin in March.

Deputy director for operations and Chatuchak market director Jaraspan Wacharothai said that after one year under the SRT’s management, the weekend market is set to undergo a landscaping renovation, with plans to improve pathways, sign posts and water management systems.

The first phase of the plan will commence in March with an initial investment of 114 million baht. Pathways will be retiled and new signs will be erected in a bid to facilitate Thai and foreign visitors. The construction is scheduled to conclude in September.

Another renovation project is poised to kick start in October, focusing on improving draining systems and roofing.

Mr Jaraspan added that the market generates over 38 million baht in revenue per month for the SRT, compared to the market’s annual revenue of 20 million baht when it was under the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration. He further hinted that a rent hike for trading stalls is being considered by the SRT but details have not been finalized.
