Shortage Of Sugar

In phuket there was less and less sugar in the supermarkets and from 2 days onwards.. they sell you only 2 kgs per person or family..

Does anybody know what happens??

Suger traders and corrupt agriculture officials all gang up to manipulate the commodity. Next will be Longgan, Rice, Rubber etc., the story always remain the same.

Sugar is price controlled in Thailand. Prices have just about tripled in the last year in the rest of the world, so it's being sold overseas where it's worth more.

From my understanding most of the sugar supply has been sold to better markets abroad.

Ms. Beach could only get some overpriced brown sugar till she saw some regular sugar at regular price in 7-II and bought enough to see us through the “drought”

A lot of sugar cane is being diverted to make ethanol. A gasoline additive is more important than your sweet tooth.

The sugar cane trucks are grossly overloaded and dangerous but the police have been instructed to let them alone.

You should consider yourself lucky. We have not been able to buy more the 2 bags of sugar here in Bangkok for a month and there have been times when it was not available at all. As said the price is controlled and is below other countries so most try to sell outside of Thailand. It is also the end of season and start of new season for refining and reportedly it has not been a good year for sugar cane so the situation could become worse if no attempt to use a free market price is made.
