I have a 18 month old Golden Retriever who has suffered severe hair loss. She has now finished her medication and her hair is growing back it will be a long slow progress, part of the problem may have been an allergy to her usual dried dog food. The Vet has recommended Hills Prescription Canine Z/D as her only source of food.

Does anyone know where I can buy it other than the vets which only sell 4kg bags at 1800 baht a bag. Is there wholesalers that I can order from? We live in Pattaya.

Thanks.

There are many vets and pet shops that stock Hills.

You can definitely order large bags from the NaJomtien Animal Hospital on Sukhumvit, west side, between Macro and the Jomtien turn off. 038757019

Also you can get in from NPW hospital, off Nern Plub Wan.

I have been looking for a wholesaler for years, as I have 4 dogs to feed, but have yet to find one.

Unfortunately, if you use imported dry dog food it is an expensive business....

But I don't trust the local stuff.

We have a Golden also about 18 months old. He is fed a basic BARF diet mostly chicken and pork, but also raw mackerel about two or tree times a week. His fur is fantastic, like silk.

Oily sea fish is ideal for promoting good skin and fur. Try it twice a week for three months I assure you you will see I positive improvement. (Good for limb joints too.)

At the end of the trading day Tesco discount their fish and that's where I bought most of our fish when we lived in Pattaya. Also the fresh-fish market in Banglamung was another place we visited on Sunday mornings.

The fish whole (head to tail) is fine, I use strong scissors to clip off the sharp dorsal fin, to two fins at the front and small spike near the anal vent, just in case. Otherwise the raw bones head etc is fine and will not cause any problem for your dog.

If your dog is not used to raw fish, introduce her to a long slice cut from the fish's flank, it's how we started him and our latest pup, now 5 months old and now a firm raw fish eater.

Thank you.

@ Mobi, I know the hospital you mentioned, we have taken ours to the one closer to Lotus on Sukhumvitt the largest size bag they sell is 4kg which does not last that long. We'll go and look in the other one and see if they sell bigger bags.

@ Cuban, I think BARF and fresh fish is a good diet however at the moment I want to stick with the prescription dry food until her hair comes back. Once she is fully furred then I'll try the fish. For the time being I just want to eliminate diet as the cause for the hair loss. She has now been spayed and since that her hair is growing a lot quicker, in hindsight the hair loss first started shortly after her first season so it may have been hormone related. As I said previously its going to be a long slow process.

There's another shop, with two branches, that stocks a huge range of dog food including, I think, Hills.

Its 'Dog Enjoy' - locations are on third road between Klang and Tai, and on Sukhumvit in Naklua, just after Chaiyaporn Vitee, driving towards central Pattaya, on left hand side.

You can also buy large bags of dog food at Thonglor Animal hospital, on the corner of Tai and Sukhumvit. I'm pretty sure they have Hills.

These places will get it in within 2-3 days if not in stock.

I don;t wish to get into a debate about dog food as everyone has their own opinions and I'm sure that feeding dogs fresh food is very good for them.

However, frankly for convenience - especially if I am away - I have always used imported dog food (first Eukanuba - which was used by my golden breeder - and these days Hills and Royal Canine)

I have an 8 year old Golden, two 5 year old Shih tsus and a 2 year old Lab and all have thrived on this diet, since they were puppies. All are healthy and rarely have any illness etc.

So it works for me and mine, but I would never use locally produced dog food.
