Thai People Recognize Other Thai People Easy?

Featured Replies

So around december me and my family went on a trip to thailand. I didn't get a seat with my family but in the middle of the plane.

A philippinen was seated next to me and she really looked thai.

So the stewerdess thought it was my mom and i had to explain in thai that it wasn't which was really uncormfortable as i don't know a lot of words.

So i answered for her and me and the stewardess had a good laugh.

So i was wondering is the thai people recognized easly?

My mom says i really look thai but when i look in the mirror i barely see that. Coming from thai mother and father.

When i was around the stores everyone talked thai to me and my mom which frankly i think doesn't look thai gets spoken to very often.

Just another question as i seem to go on a streak.

Is it tall being 175cm as thai teenager? I'm 15. My dad which my mom keep referring to tall as he was 176cm and she's about 160.

The whole village says i'm really tall but when i stand along the other thai i seem pretty normal.

My wife picks Thais quite easily. I cant pick Thai here in Australia but I can tell Chinese as they have round faces, Vietnamese are fairly easy and Japanese are easy because of their eye shape but Thai, Phillipine, Indonesian are similar to me.

And if your tall for a Thai then thats a good thing! Thank your Mum and Dad for your height.

Based on looks alone it's about as hard to distinguish a random Thai person from a random person from Vietnam, Cambodia or the Phillippines as it is to distinguish a person from England to one from France or Germany. Yes there are a couple 'types' that occur more frequently in some countries (eg. French are a bit more likely to have black hair than Germans) but you still find plenty dark haired Germans or blonde French people.

It's the same in Asia; to pick people reliably you depend as much on other cues, like fashion, behavior and of course language.

Overall Thai people can have VERY different looks, going from very light skin colored to really very black, plus all the difference in the shapes of eyes, noses, hair type, etc. You can very easily find a Thai person who would fit the stereotypical looks of just about any other East Asian including Chinese, Korean and Japanese, all the way down to Indonesia and the Philippines. A Thai collegue of mine got constantly taken for Japanese when we went to Japan. A Philippine collegue in Thailand gets taken for Thai 100% of the time.

In the past we could recognize the Scandinaviens, the Germans, the Spanish, the French by their looks.

More and more people are getting mixed and I guess, that in 2 or 3 generations there are no or less differences.

Same is happening in Thailand, where Cambodians, Laotians, Birmese and other Asian people are more and more mixed.

I am living here for almost 10 years now and I can't see a difference between a Thai, a Cambodian, a Laotian or a Birmese. Some people see the difference and otherwise they can hear the difference.

yes, we Thai know each other easy

many things you can see

maybe better you stay longer in Thailand to understand more.

what I no understand ... you are 15?

my nephew is 15 ... he never come here this place.

the wife is an isarn girl, but looks more lao, some phillipinos i see in australia look like they have just moved from the kamen areas of thailand.

at the chinese managed grocery today, 4 thai students were buying up big, hearing them speak in thai, i said to the cashier " you have a thai group here today", she says "you can speak thai what about your wife?", trying not to embarass her, i could only smile.

in thailand and australia, the wife has been asked if she is lao, korean, chinese but never philipino or cambodian.

Without trying to sound offensive.........I can't tell the difference between Filipino,Thai,Burmese or whatever. If I see european people,I've normally got a good idea where they're from but with asians it's a whole new ball game.My other half can spot the difference. She'll tell me "Oh they are from Laos.I can tell just by looking at them " while I'll just be standing there totally bewildered by the lack of difference. blink.png

Thanks for giving me the answers and relative information!

I don't believe I just read this....

I don't....

I would like to think I wrote better than that at 15, but perhaps not.

I can usually tell the differences between nationalities of farangs and in South East Asian peoples.

Not so much by physical appearances, but I think their facial expressions give them away. For example Americans seem to have different facial expressions from English people, what I describe as the American look. Can’t explain it, but it`s there. The same with Germans and so on.

When I’m visiting Immigration, according to my eyes the Burmese stand out a mile from the Thais, as plain as day.

Thai people do stare at me sometimes, but people used to stare at me in my own country as well, so that’s normal for me.
