Man charged in attack on CU lecturer

A man has confessed to slashing a Chulalongkorn University lecturer with a paper cutter for refusing to approve a draft thesis submitted by a friend's sweetheart. "I felt angry for my friend. So I attacked [the lecturer] at my friend's request," Praphansak Promngarm said yesterday.

His friend, Sasitorn Tiyakhot, has denied any wrongdoing and said she will only speak in court.

According to Praphansak, Sasitorn's girlfriend has spent four years working on a master's degree in engineering from the prestigious university, and blamed her inability to graduate on Asst Prof Jirawat Chewaroungroaj, who would not approve her thesis.

Sasithorn and Praphansak, both 25, now face charges of pre-mediated physical assault. Praphansak allegedly attacked Jirawat, a deputy dean of the university's Faculty of Engineering, in his office last Monday. The 49-year-old lecturer sustained wounds to his back and an arm, requiring 20 stitches. Metropolitan Police Division 6 deputy commander Pol Colonel Utasin Ritrueangdej said police were able to track down Praphansak even though he wore a wig to disguise himself. The attackers friend goes to the University and is doing a Masters In Engineering.

The sweetheart of the attackers friend submitted a thesis on behalf of the student and it was refused by the Asst Prof Jirawat Chewaroungroaj becuase it was not her work.

The student and attacker then formulated a plan to beat up on the Proffessor because he wouldn't pass her on the work completed by someone else.

Well done by the proffessor and sorry for your injuries.

The sweetheart is the one who completed and submitted the thesis for Sasitorn Tiyakhot who is actually sitting for her masters.

I dont understand how the thesis gets rejected with no warning.

Nothing unusual in this event. Unfortunately, similar attacks occur at universities around the world. If anything though, the characteristic that the alleged grad student was in the engineering faculty fits the pattern. Usually, theses incidents occur in the the maths, physics and associated faculties like engineering and computer sciences. Maybe it has to do with the courses that do not have human interaction as elements. Conversely, such events are a rarity in the natural sciences, physed, commerce, nursing, law and agriculture faculties.

Not hire the person? Really? Ask your HR department about the the emotional stability assessment scores for the personnel in the IT and engineering departments if you want to get a dose of reality. She'd probably fit right in. (Excluding the chemical and mechanical engineering people though, as they are very different than the civil and computer engineering people. It's like two different gene pools.)

I'd be interested to see your source for this . . . having never witnessed anything even remotely similar during my BA nor MBA days . . . and I went to Uni on three continents.

Not saying you're wrong, just wondering how this is not unusual and then specified to certain faculties

Nothing justifies this assault even if it does happen in other universities world wide. This is a serious criminal offence.

If this happened in a University in Australia then the suspect would be looking down the barrel of 10 yrs. Intentionally causing serious injury/assault with a weapon carries a 10 yr sentence. The suspect would probably be on remand also.

Was the suspect even a student of the university? People should stop apologising and downgrading the actions of some thais especially in cases like this.

Was the suspect even a student of the university? People should stop apologising and downgrading the actions of some thais especially in cases like this.

It is a criminal offense where you come from but Thai courts may take into consideration that the professor caused the student to lose face by not accepting the thesis. Could this be mitigating circumstances?

As to the offense in OZ, sounds like a light sentence. It could be first-degree attempted murder, premeditated with a deadly weapon, in at least one first world country, and if convicted it would carry a life sentence, usually with a possibility of parole. What might qualifiy this as attempted murder are the premeditation, deadly weapon, disguised identity of the perp, conspiratorial nature of the attack, and inflicting injuries to the victim's upper torso.

Sounds like the girl couldn't accept the fact that she just wasn't good enough! So her moron boyfriend and his half wit mate decide that carving up the professor will change his mind about accepting her thesis!

It would be nice to know if the wig that was worn as a disguise belonged to the girl?

I hope that the girl at least gets kicked out of the Uni.

Well I would initially be quite hesitant to hire this person, and I would want to get to the bottom of this story before I might even reconsider.

In all countries there are people who have qualifications and impressive GPA scores but are a total nightmare in the workplace, to the point where they cause so much disruption, upset other productive staff, that it is simply not worth the hassle of employing them.

I've been through this before with several graduates employed in various departments of a very large multinational. Eventually they came to me to ask 'how can we fix this case?'

Answer - In many cases you can't, and you simply cannot allow the disprution, upset and lack of performance to continue. Calmy move them out, pay them off if needed, but get back to a productive situation as quickly as possible.

I simply can't agree with g'kids statements about emotional stability scores for 'IT staff and engineering staff (except chemical.....)'.

What a load of rubbish.

Today pretty much all professional organizations (but moreso in the West, Singapore etc.) use EI and similar / other assessments as part of the recruitment process and I have quite a lot of knowledge / experience with this subject.

It is true that these assessments can help to identify folks who are likely to cause / create workplace problems and issues which can negatively affect the working climate and decrease the productivity, motivation, and creativity of other staff.

Disruptive etc., people can be profesionally qualified or unskilled people in any type of profession.
