orpheus454
We are a group of musicians in Krabi. We have an idea for a show and would like to find a suitable venue. What we have in mind is a show on Thai "music for life" and "look tung" music. It would be part anthropology, tracing the history and social context of the genre back to, say, Surapol Sombatjarern, through the communist insurgency in the 70's with bands such as Caravan, into the modern era with the music of Carabao and their contemporaries, up to the present through the work of Baowee, Job Banjob and other southerners. Sort of like a documentary, explaining in English the artistic, historical and social significance of the songs and performers, but also a comprehensive anthology, with live performance of the songs. Many tourists say they are interested in Thai culture. We see this show as a couple of hours enjoying and getting to know this particular aspect of local culture. We have plenty of material to work with, so could conceivably present it as a narrative over, for example, a number of weekly shows, but could also repeat the basics to account for tourist turnover. We would have no particular requirements of a venue apart from a stage and a wall on which to screen images to do with show. Ao Nang would probably be most suitable in terms of drawing a crowd, but in town somewhere would also be fine. We won't be cheap, but would be happy to do a pilot show or two to gauge punter interest and test material. If you or a venue you know might be interested, drop me a PM here. sms747
Sounds very interesting, especially the singing of communist rebel sogs, good luck. Many tourists say they are interested in Thai culture but unfortunately they are pretty cluless about what that means. This sort of idea is very welcome. gk10002000
Nice idea. I have been to Pattaya a lot, and about the only "Thai" dance and music that is readily available is at the Ruen Thai restaurant. I am always eader to see some Mor Lam, and other music.
