NAKHON SI THAMMARAT: -- Several witnesses have told police they spotted a Scottish woman on the night she claimed she was raped - but they did not see any man approach her or use violence against her.

Nakhon Si Thammarat police interrogated several witnesses who said they saw the tourist at three restaurants where she drank and at the apartment building in which she stayed. All said they had not anybody threatening or attacking her.

The 20-year-old filed a police complaint saying four men had raped her on Friday night - a story that has been widely reported by foreign media.

Nakhon Si Thammarat police chief Pol Maj-General Ronnapong Saikaew yesterday convened a meeting of senior officers to discuss the progress of the investigation. The meeting was told several witnesses provided the same testimony - that they did not see any man approaching the woman.

Another two witnesses were invited to testify - an engineer of a petroleum firm in Malaysia and an executive of the Jamaica Restaurant where the woman drank. They said they remembered the woman well because she was drunk while with her friends, who were also tourists.

Pol Lt-Colonel Niti Boonchan, deputy commander of Muang district police station who is heading the investigation, told the meeting that he also interviewed witnesses from the Jamaica Shop and the Nakhon Viengchan Shop - the third place the woman drank. All testified she was drunk and quarrelled with patrons.

After this meeting, the Nakhon Si Thammrat police chief visited the apartment building where the woman was staying and spoke to Noi Raksachon, 33, whose room was next to that of the Scottish woman.

Noi said her neighbour's swearing woke her up at 3.45am, and then she heard a man come to the woman's room at 5am and asked her to go downstairs for fear she might fall from the room's balcony. But the woman yelled at him, prompting him to leave.

Noi said if the woman was being raped inside her room, she would have heard calls for help.

The building is connected to the Nakhon Viengchan Shop with a second floor walkway. Jatuporn Mongkolkarun, the shop owner, said she had a security officer walk the woman to her room.

Pol Colonel Sompong Tiparpakul, commander of Muang police station, said police are still waiting for the results of physical checks on the woman to confirm if she had been raped.

At the very least here there is room for doubt about her allegations. Not that it stopped this type of report.

GANG of sex beasts dragged a Scots student off a street in Thailand before raping their terrified victim.

The girl had been on a night out and had become separated from her boyfriend after she was refused entry to a restaurant.

It’s believed she was snatched by four men in a pick-up truck who spotted her in the street.

The attackers then took her to a nearby building and attacked the 20-year-old on a balcony.

And of course any questions that are now being raised will mean this is now a non-story.

I knew this story didn't add up from the start and this just confirms the doubts I had reading the original story.

If the whole claim she is making is false and a lie then she should be ashamed of herself.

However I guess we all need to wait for the medical reports.

What do they do at The Nation all day?

"All said they had not anybody threatening or attacking her."

or is it just me who needs to go back to school?

yeah I noticed the error also. I thought articles are meant to be proof read before being published?

channel 3 have just replayed over and over and over again of an eye witness report about 10mins.

and guess what they managed about 10seconds to report that those two suspects that carried out that horrendous crime against that poor girl, have done a runner, there's a surprise.

From The Nation:

Noi said if the woman was being raped inside her room, she would have heard calls for help.

From Daily Mail

'The police have said the people living nearby just thought it was a fight and didn't do anything. The police and authorities are very humiliating, their whole system has let me down.

No report in The Nation of neighbours hearing "a fight", but they tell you a neighbour didn't hear anything who should have heard something, suggesting there was nothing to be heard. The alleged victim herself tells us the police said neighbours heard a fight. Maybe that is true, maybe not - I would think true.

It's all clear as mud now so the jury must be out.

Have no factual info on the ladies complaint, but it does seem that the BIB are not real sympithic toward foreign complaints against local talent in this regard. It would appear the witnesses that are referred to saw nothing, so why they are even called witnesses by the police is beyond me.

I just wonder how much English Khun Noi understands? (especially English with a drunken Scottish accent) in order to make the judgement that the neighbour was swearing and her yells (both of which according to the report she heard) weren't in fact calls of distress as opposed to just 'mouthing off'.

When i hear two Thais shouting it is very hard (given more poor Thai language skills) to be able to distinguish between an argument and a full on fight. I just hear sounds.

Is Khun Noi a prolific English speaker or just an average product of the Thai education system?? (No slur intended)

Interesting. If she has done a false accusation, she should in fact be thrown in jail. Or.......the police

are coming up with a bizarre form of damage control by denying everything. Love the " witnesses did not

see anything" style of defense. So I guess I could be on that list, since I did not see anything either.... :-)

Cui bono?

Looks like the four guys have the right connections.

Exactly! Who benefits from having this rape report discredited? Everyone concerned except for the alleged victim. The BIB have little or no interest in investigating a real crime. The perpetrators are locals, possibly with connections, and the local BIB and their neighbors would probably prefer not to have to try or imprison them. The local government and businesses would like trouble like this to just disappear.

All of the quotes above could be true and still not disprove that she was raped. It really doesn't matter who she was with or who saw her an hour or two or three before the crime. Did anyone see here at the exact time that the rape took place? If not, all of these stories are being paraded out to discredit her.

As gk said, until the results of the medical exam are announced, it is really too early to pronounce her guilty or innocent.

While this news story does not present her in a favorable light, I do not see that any of the witnesses quoted can prove that she was NOT raped at some time that evening.

Is there supporting medical evidence of rape?

A gang rape typically isn't a benign process.

That was supposed to take three days to be ready.

Whatever happened, I am skeptical of The BIB, and they have a significant history of trying to make things that make Thailand look bad either go away, or blame the foreigner. It will be interesting to see what comes our. Anyone care to remember some events in Kanchanaburi, Pai, Chiang Mai and Koh Samui to name a few?

They have just arrested someone who has confessed to to twice raping the girl. Sorry, but it is in Thai.

http://www.matichon....atid=&subcatid=

Kind of refutes all the expat Thai expert posts that perps have connections, BIB don't care if foreigner attacked blah, blah - same posts when two Russian women were attacked & raped in Pattaya last month, low & behold BIB did arrest & charge the attackers

And don't forget the Evil Man from Krabi, whose rape of a farang girl was

immortalized in a YouTube song by the father.

The police attempts to make that one go away bordered on the theater

of the absurd, right down to a bizarre video they made.

Anyone know why the crims here confess so readily? Torture? Or is it part of seeking redemption (Buddhism) and admitting?

My guess is the rubber hose method.
