My best guess would be around 20 or more living in Kalasin City (Mueang), and possibly another 80 or more within say 15 to 30 km of the city... Plus we almost constantly have many "Expat Visitors" (a few days to a few weeks) constantly coming thru the area...

There are currently two different groups of Expats who meet up on a semi-regular basis in town... One group of mostly English, Austrailan meet up at the Supak Hotel on Thursdays around 1:PM... Another vaired, but longer term group of Dutch, German, Austrian and American meet causually on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays at the Kalafave Coffee shop around the lake in the park about 3:PM.. Both a real mix of personalities and types, but mostly good guys, and you will find them very open and welcoming to "New Residents"...

Some of us have been living in and enjoying Kalasin for 10 to 12 years, others only a matter of a few months... As with any area we have seen many Expats come and stay only a few months, while others of us seem to have made this our new home... Some only spend 3 to 9 months each visit but keep returning year after year and consider Kalasin their 2nd home...

After living here for the past 12 years, I am always willing to answer questions as long as the questions aren't too difficult... Seriously, Kalasin is a nice little city that is going thru a constant Growth spurt.... But then it seems like most cities in the area are experiencing the same...

Sorry, but Kalasin is not on the map as far as farangs is concerned. It may be on the map of your G/F. Kalasin is boring for any farang no matter how you slice it.

But if you like boredom and are willing to live 45 km outside of Kalasin, I may have something for you: Friend of mine has 2 houses. One in Pattaya and one in Chakarrat. Wants to sell the Chakarrat property, Was built for 3.5 Million according to European building standarts. Nice house, I have been there twice. He will probably sell it for 1,2 million now.

If it wasen't for the boredum factor in this particular aerea, I would probably have bought it by now.

As mentioned above, the idea of settling in Kalasin may well come from your Wife/GF.

How about rentig a House/Condo for 6 months in the aerea before leaping? After this time you may decide to leap or not leap at all.

Cheers.

Any place can be boring, it is the individual that decides if he wants to be bored or not. I taught school in Kalasin for three years and as far as i m concerned it is the nicest place in Thailand to live. I have lived in Koh Samui, Mukdahan and have spent considerable time in Bangkok and Phuket. They all have good and bad points, but the place I enjoyed living in the most was Kalasin.

I have to Echo George's comments, but also agree with Swessie... It did not take me but about 2 hours spent in a small village to know that I would be totally Bored trying to live like that.... That is why I rented a very nice house in the city for over two years before deciding to build my own house here, in the city... And when I first came to Kalasin the closest thing to "Farang Food" was a Hot Dog from 7/11.... I have watched this sleepy little town grow into a small city, and lately progressing towards a Large City... We now have a very nice Lotus, and they are currently building a new "Big C" store which should open within the next 2 to 3 months... We have 2 KFC's, Pizza Company and MK. and It is true that there are no "Expat" Bars and really only one true "Expat" restaurant, but the price, quality and quantity of various Thai restaurants makes the lack of "Expat" places Not a problem...

Just shows you how fast things are changing here in Kalasin, just today I found out that there is an "Expate Bar" opening up about a block away from the Bus Station, and it is due to open this weekend... Obviously having not been there as of yet, I can't tell you much about it, but the word is that it is being opened by a nice guy from England who has lived in the area for some time....

An Expat Bar, good to hear. I was in kalasin on Wednesday and went to the first (singsong) bar on the left as you enter Soi Pattaya, the one across from the big Karaoke bar. This place is a very nice spot, it has some nice decoration and well spaced tables. At least 6 good looking girls (and one big girl, and perhaps one ladyboy) who all can sing and are not just robats on the stage, but entertain. I have been in here 3 times now and enjoyed myself everytime.

Went past it the other day, it's called Scotts Bar, it's about 50m up the road that goes at 45 degrees opposite the bus station. Gonna pop in at some point during the week and see what's what.

I stopped by Saturday mid day for about an hour... Met the owner and his wife and both seem like nice people... Place seems a bit sterile, but then again it has just openned... I am not a drinker, so just had a coke and chatted a bit...

Also yesterday heard a strong rumor that Makro has purchased property fairly close to the New Big C location, and will start construction soon... Once again, just a rumor, but the Thai I heard it from is usually in the Know...
