EGAT negotiating with Malaysia for electricity purchase

BANGKOK, 28 February 2013 (NNT) – The Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) is under discussion with Malaysia’s power plants for the purchase of the Malay electricity.

EGAT Governor Suthat Pattamasiriwat said the authority had contacted large and small power plants in Malaysia to buy their power. If successful, it will add more power to Thailand’s power reserves, and thus ensure higher energy security.

The EGAT is also campaigning for less energy consumption among industries and households during the anticipated peak period of April 5th. He expected Thailand to have 1,000 megawatts of extra power reserves if the nation could secure additional power from Malaysia, and the energy saving campaign is successful,

Factories have been asked to suspend production during the peak hour of 1-2 pm on April 5, which is the first day of the energy outage due to maintenance at the Yanada natural gas platform in Myanmar. Households could also help by having no more than one air conditioner on per household.

As for the management of electricity in Bangkok and the South, which will be directly affected by the power suspension in Myanmar, the EGAT has affirmed that it could draw the power from other areas, by working with the Metropolitan Electricity Authority and Provincial Electricity Authority.

MEKONG MASSACRE
China to execute four over Mekong murders

BEIJING: -- China planned to execute alleged Golden Triangle drug lord Nor Kham and three accomplices after their death sentences were approved by the nation's highest court, state media said on Thursday.

The executions would be carried out on Friday by a court in Kunming, capital of the south-western border province of Yunnan, court officials were quoted as saying.

Thai citizen Hsang Kham, Lao citizen Zha Xika, and Yi Lai, who was stateless, also faced execution on Friday.

The four men were convicted of murdering 13 Chinese sailors on the Mekong River in October 2011.

The court had arranged for relatives and representatives of the Thai and Lao consulates to meet the men in Kunming before their executions, the official Xinhua news agency said.

Nor Kham and his gang were found guilty of attacking two Chinese cargo ships in collusion with Thai soldiers, while they kidnapped other Chinese sailors and held their ships for ransom earlier in2011, the court said.

At his appeal hearing in December, Nor Kham was quoted as saying he "neither plotted nor ordered the murder" of the sailors in October2011 and only heard about the attack later.

During his trial, Nor Kham accused Thai soldiers of sole responsibility for the attack.

But he later pleaded guilty to the charges, before changing his plea again at the appeal hearing, according to state media reports.

Two other members of Nor Kham’s gang, both Myanmar citizens, were given a suspended death sentence and eight years in prison for their involvement in the murder, kidnapping and hijacking.

BoT: Thai exports recovering, tourism still robust

BANGKOK, 28 February 2013 (NNT) - The Bank of Thailand (BoT) has reported that Thai exports are starting to rebound while the tourism sector has been doing well since the beginning of this year, with more than 2.3 million tourists having visited Thailand.

Senior Director of the BoT’s Macroeconomic and Monetary Policy Department Methee Supapongse said the overall Thai economy in January 2013 had expanded due to increasing private consumption, investment and exports. The Thai exports, he added, had a tendency to gradually improve in line with the more stable global economy.

According to Mr Methee, all groups of Thai industrial exports have shown good signs, especially steel and metals, automobiles and electrical appliances. Exports of agricultural produce have also expanded, whereas the production of the industrial sector has slightly slowed down.

As for tourism, Mr Methee said it was considered favorable, thanks to the continuously increasing arrivals of Chinese, Japanese and South Korean tourists. Other factors contributing to the healthy economic situation in Thailand include a low jobless rate, declining inflation and balance of payment surplus.
