Not sure about this version 8. But this is software which just couldn't be removed by me. Forget the built-in uninstall or manual registry edit.

www.majorgeeks.com has a removal tool but I'm too dumb for that as well.

Nasty stuff IMHO. Shun it, until you see it can be removed again!

I don't think so.

Probably something else you installed on your PC, knowingly or unknowingly.

I use Thunderbird to access 3 of Gmail accounts. After I installed Avast 8 I could no longer access them. It seems that the latest version of Avast has decided to take over the provision of SSL credentials to Thunderbird but it's providing the same credentials for 3 different Gmail account so Thunderbird wouldn't work. Had to reconfigure Avast to make it work.

Since malware can be encrypted inside SSL, I would rather decrypt it and possibly break something than not decrypt it and run the risk of a 0-day.

I found Avast 6 to be great. Avast 7 was unusable, had to uninstall it. Lots of users on the Avast support forum had similar experiences.

Any reports on the 8 version?

It seems that the latest version of Avast has decided to take over the provision of SSL credentials to Thunderbird but it's providing the same credentials for 3 different Gmail account so Thunderbird wouldn't work. Only one of the e-mail accounts I access with Thunderbird (v.17.0.3) is via SSL, but Avast 8 simply threw up the same warning message as before -- something about it can't monitor e-mails downloaded via SSL and recommending I use an unsecure connection and let Avast do the security. As usual, after the first warning message after installing Avast 8, I no longer see the warning, and I still use the SSL connection on Thunderbird.

What it means is that if someone sends you malware and you download it, Avast can't prevent it because it can't see inside the connection.

But if you're smart you won't download anything that can harbour executable code anyway, right?

I know Outlook can be configured to block such attachments anyway, but I don't know about Thunderbird.

Yeah, I know how it works and what it does. I was just contrasting my smooth transition to Avast 8 to endure's more bumpy path. I am curious why things happened differently for me and him.

Avast upgrade to 8 came 5 days ago, no problems click upgrade on 3rd, just everyday is another upgrade patch ?
