rubberduck
Here in europe you get a very decent used car for 40.ooo - 80.ooo baht, for 200k - 400k you get a beauty. Never understood those insane prices in Thailand. 'A young wife - a long life' Edited April 7, 2013 by rubberduck
ClareQuilty
don't think the poster who claimed he has 4m Baht in cash is a teacher making 50k Baht a month. Funny thing is, the great majority of we teachers make a lot less than 50,000 baht/month. In fact 30-35k is not unusual. And this at a time of very rapidly increasing cost of living (and salaries) in Thailand. In fact Thai teachers typically make about the same as 'farang'. So, its even worse than you think. Naam
Lets look at reality, there isnt much personal, property or income tax collected in thailand, so where does all of the money come from to provide a basically socialist state ? you guessed it corporate and import taxes. By the way if you can afford an expensive car good for you but dont brag about it, thats when you start to look cheap no matter how much money you have. perhaps you start to look cheap... looked at through the eyes of the "no haves" who judge any justified argument in a discussion of those with a little more money as "bragging". happened dozen of time to me. best was a thread "how much do you pay for electricity?". those with rather high bills were immediately attacked by envious little poor boys even though they just participated in some kind of poll. same same but not different here. nobody "bragged" but argued with facts and some "no haves" jump in and call it either openly or in a subtle way "bragging" instead of trying to get a life

farang000999
Man these threads are so silly. Here are the costs of a car: 1. Depreciation 2. Maintenance 3. Insurance Maintenance and Insurance in Thailand are reasonably priced. YES a car might cost when initially purchased but you do not use up all the car's value like a chocolate bar. The car only depreciates so much every year - that depreciation is your true cost of ownership of the automobile. So the fact that a car costs double here what it does in the USA really does not mean much... all that matters is the depreciation (and i suppose the inability to earn a return on capital invested in your automobile). When you consider how much cheaper everything else is in Thailand - how is it even close? The reality is that there is no way for any sane individual to every propose that Thailand is more expensive than the West - UNLESS that farang has children that he wants to raise with a quality English language education.
WarpSpeed
Cheaper definitely describes a lot about Thailand mostly when it comes to quality. But not EVERYTHING is cheaper by any means that's very a common myth, especially these days.. Edited April 8, 2013 by WarpSpeed

Naam
If You live to Western Standards its more Expensive here. i [not so] humbly beg to differ and claim that my living standards improved by far and my living expenses are a fraction of those which i would spend on the same lifestyle in a western country. it's the bottom line that counts and not single items such as paying for imported items like cheese, wine or salami princely prices. keemapoot
^ About a 1960 International Harvester Pickup. Built like a sherman tank brick sh*thouse, almost impossible to destroy. The reason I say almost is that I blew the tranny out of a 1963 taking it offroad in compound gear when I was about 14. Got a good belt strapping for that, I did. Naam
one of my dream cars here in Thailand would be something like this one (powered by a twin-turbo V8, 550hp measured at the rear axle):
stingray
Not joking, really, who is stupid enough to buy a second and car in Thailand ? The only Thai I know selling them makes 200k/month because he never sells any car without cheating the meter and many other things... I must be be pretty dumb cosI have two secondhand cars at the moment. Both a lot more fun than a Jazz or pick-up. I've had a fair mix in my 13-14 yrs here. To be honest I've always managed to sell the secondhand ones on for what I paid and one I traded into a dealer when buying a new car and came out ahead. It's mostly about knowing the market. There are "bargains" to be had. You just have to forget the "price in Europe" nonsense. Of course if you don't have the cash in the first place, well no point teasing yourself and stick to a Jazz. I dislike auto gearboxes and the four door saloons here are for fuddy duddies. I must be be pretty dumb cosI have two secondhand cars at the moment. Both a lot more fun than a Jazz or pick-up. Comparing to other cars in Thailand is reasonable, comparing to prices in Europe (where in Europe BTW, lots of different prices there) simply makes no sense at all. (Unless you want to import). Not every one like to have a Thai Ecobox. If u like something special, like a Bemer or maybe some kind if Sportcar, you have almost no choice. In this case only second hand can fullfill your dreams
Ace of Pop
Thai people cant get Finance that easy. For Example, a Thai Gov Officer, or Teacher earning say 50 K. P.M. can borroew far more than a Mom n Pop Shop whoes income has been 75 K for years. They wont be granted a Loan on a Nackered old BMW anyway. Not that anyone with Half a Brain over 18 would want one.
Songhua
There were quite a few of these in Australia in the 60's. RHD - don't know if they were built in Australia or not, and there was a tray version which was quite popular as a farm vehicle. Also an IH (2.5 ton) ... I obtained my Army licence at the wheel of one these (great fun driving them into the back of a C-130 !) .... they were in service with the Oz military from the 60's until the 80's. keemapoot
^ Yeah, that old IH pickup really brought back memories for me too. It was an extra vehicle just laying around that basically I learned to drive on at about age 13. We had the 1963-4 C-series. But, I think we are both talking about the A-C series, same in Australia. Evidently, IH were very active in Australia too. That truck rode really nice, like a car, but it had a compound gear (technically first gear), that could climb a cliff face better than any 4WD. It was very fun to drive and all my friends loved it because it was so weird and dorky it was cool. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_Harvester_A-Series
ignis
The pink pickup would cost a fraction of the price here to restore.. See a green one every so often like that here in mint condition driving around.. Many a USA type old cars here, many LHD but some are RHD [from Australia maybe ?] most are in top, mint condition. A V8 would even better. All my life i drove American cars, even here in LOS. Had several Trans Ams, T Bird, Oldsmobiles, Challengers here. I'm old style and i dont like all those Plastomat Ecoboxes. Sorry, Ecobox can never satisfy me.
